Thanks for posting these - my nephew is coming to visit next week
and they'll be plenty of opportunity for pool shots. I will
definitely try both lenses and play with AI SERVO. My nephew is 2
1/2 so there is no sitting still! Also, great to see the before
and after post-processing.

Thanks again for posting.

High Speed Shutter usually means Large Aperture which means a really shallow depth of field. This means he would have had a hard time focusing with people jumping around. So I can see how AI Servo helped capture the image of moving kids (causing constant focus changes).

Rick
None of your photos needed or benefited by using AI Servo or AI
Focus. They would have been just as sharp if shot in the one shot
mode. They are great shots with beautiful stop action that is the
result of fast shutter speed. AI Servo only is of benefit if the
subject is moving toward the camera or away from it at a
significant rate of speed. There is movement in these pictures but
not toward/away from the camera.

Keep shooting though. They are good pictures.
I wanted to check out AI SERVO with some pool pics. The first shot
(AI Servo) was taken with the 28-135 IS and the second (AI Focus)
and third (AI Servo) were taken with the Canon 100mm f2.8 macro.
The AI Servo works great and both lenses performed well. I love
this camera!!

Your shot puts me on edge. I'm sure this is not the intent, but it looks as thought the woman is about to drown the child. I think it has something to do with her hand covering most of the child face.

Actually, I'm glad it put you on edge. It was her first time going under water (her mom was showing her how to hold her nose) so the reason I like the image so much is because it does bring about some emotion.

John,

Thanks for your comment. That's what I thought. If you look at the rest of the shots, they were jumping even more in some of the other ones.

http://www.pbase.com/roberta/10d_summer_fun

Well today I tried One Shot with the same set up- kids jumping around in the pool. The only difference was, I used the 70-200L f4. I'm downloading them right now so I'll see if there is a difference in the shots.

The manual says ONE SHOT is for Still Subjects. I actually haven't used One Shot much at all but I tested it out today. I usually shoot in Tv or Av and use one AF Point which I change according to the composition of the image. Seems to work very well.

Thanks,

Roberta

Of course, if people are jumping up and down the focus may never
lock. So you were correct that this is a situation that ai servo
is perfect for

Basically - if your subjects are moving so that your camera won't
lock - and that can be people jumping up and down - the AI servo
can save the shot because the camera will always take the shot
whether it's in focus lock or not. The camera will do it's best
guess.
John,
Very interesting that you are able to use One Shot for batters and
pitchers.
I'll have to try One Shot more often to see what I get. I've used
AI Focus a lot with good results. Thanks for your comments!

Thank you Roberta, that is pretty much what I have been doing. Maybe I have too critical an eye.
Ben,
Post processing all of those proofs would be hours of work. I have
created some Actions in PS6 but I find that many times, I process
them individually.
If you show your clients an example of a proof and a finished
piece, I'm sure they will understand that the finished image will
be much higher quality.

John,
Here are two new pics. Both were taken with the Canon 70-200 f4L.

The first shot was taken using One Shot, 1/500 sec., f4.5, ISO 100. The second shot was AI Focus, 1/500 sec., f4.5, ISO 100. I had more shots in focus yesterday with AI Servo but my shutter speeds were faster too. I took about 20 action shots with One Shot today with a few in focus. Then I took 20 more with AI Focus and most were good. I didn't use AI Servo today.

Another observation: Yesterday I had the white balance set on AUTO and the skin tones were too yellow (I corrected them in PS6). Today I set the white balance for Daylight and the skin tones are too cool, and lack the warmth of her tan ! I did not correct the skin tones on today's pics. Both days were bright and sunny.

Hi Rick,

By the way, I'm a she, not a he! I was thinking the same thing because most of my aperture settings were f2.8-f6.7 for the pool shots.

Thanks for your comments!

Gordon,

Funny you should mention a bikini shot! I've noticed that any shots like that draw a big following to the post! Sorry, Mom (me) requires semi modest bathing suits!!

Hi Cara,

Glad you benefited from the AI Servo discussion. I shot again today and tried One Shot as mentioned by a previous poster. I had a much higher percentage of sharp pics using AI Servo. However, my shutter speeds were mostly 1/500 sec today which is a bit slower than yesterday, but still pretty fast. I used the 70-200 f4L today. It just arrived 10:30 AM!!!!!

Garrett,

You looked at the straight out of camera pics in my pbase gallery? The pics were showing up very yellowish on my monitor. You think the skin tones are better there? Hmm, maybe my monitor is off a bit...or my eyes!

Thanks for your comment.

Thanks Andy. It's nice to share, learn and benefit from the experience of others. I appreciate all of the comments and suggestions!
Roberta,

This has been a very instructive thread. Thanks for starting it,
and thanks to others for their insights and even their
disagreements. Good stuff.

Yes, I looked at the originals that you posted on pbase. The original version of "Splash 6" was a bit yellowish and benefitted from your adjustment in Photoshop, but "Hug" was perfect to begin with, and your adjustment in Photoshop made it look unnatural.

......you would have to be jumping up and down so we could judge whether the AI Servo mode was needed. :)

Roberta, In looking at some of your 10D shots (other galleries) I noticed some grain in the background, is that something you added or did it come from sharpening? I'm on the fence with this camera and the only scary thing right now is the focusing!
