Meikon underwater housing for Sony a7 / a7R

I had one meikon underwater case for my NEX5 (with 16mm lens) and it worked fine.

This is great. I think I'll buy one or wait for a new case with different focal lenght (lens) set.

:-)

Thanks for the info!

Interesting. Next time I get some diving on my calendar, I'll look this up.

I wonder how the zooming works on the 28-70mm though. It looks like a gear setup, but I don't see any included gearing. After some research into previous Meikon housings, it seems that some housings designed for non-powerzoom lenses don't support zooming. You just set it to wide-angle and that's all you get.

I think that in this case, and if you a take a look, there's a little wheel on which you can zoom.

But even so, and for anything but "macro" shots with this lens, you'll end up using the wide end most of the time.

There's a new cheap underwater housing for Sony Alpha a7 / a7R from the Chinese brand Meikon:

http://www.meikestore.com/product/meikon-waterproof-housing-case-40m-130ft-for-sony-a7-a7r/3027.html

It's designed only for the 28-70 mm kit lens. Has anyone used it? I'd like to know whether any other lenses would fit in?
I - sincerely - do hope it's up to the task - Some of us go deeper than 40m and your'e putting a 3000 bucks camera combo in risk of contact with salt water...

On the other hand - and for the price - it look's tempting!? :)

Best regards,
Pedro

It's not that expensive. You can get the combo for almost half of that price these days. And given that I use a proper underwater housing, in case it gets flooded, my insurance will cover the damage. On the other hand, the Nauticam housing for a7 costs almost 3000 bucks.

I contacted meikestore.com and asked whether any other lens would fit in the housing. Their answer was that "this housing only works with 28-70mm lens". Though I'm not sure if that means that the person answering just wasn't sure.

As I replied many times....I and my buddies did crazy things by buying 6 housings from Meikon, for our Nex5/Nex5n. All ended up with uncontrollable button pressings at deeper water. I managed to talk to their sales/product managers and got our housings changed. Well, this time, they work up to 19M. There was no zooming / focusing rings. They are very good for sports where waterproof is needed in surfing. However, at this time of writing, action cams are better candidates for these purposes.

You have a good supplier, if that is for the A7R combo! :)

But it will not cover the lost pictures and the ruined dive trip/holiday/weekend... :(
On the other hand, the Nauticam housing for a7 costs almost 3000 bucks.
Usually, you'll get what you payed for - Just saying... :)

It does not look like it fits other lenses than the 28-70. But to make it clear, the Nauticam does not fit the FE24-70Z either ;-) But for 3000 bucks it fits at least the FE35mm

But other than this, I was wondering what flash you would mount on that thing. A7 has no dome port, neither the housing has a hot shoe but a cold shoe.

Slave flash will not work either without built in flash

Cheers

My meikon case for my NEX 7 has 2 plugs for optical wire on the front so you can trigger external flashes with the inbuilt flash.

If you look close at the case open (see photos in their site), you can see a wire inside.

What is that? Sure not some cord to trigger exterior flash?!
