So since the newer FX Nikons are now equipped with what used to be known as the amateur interface, should we now classify the D800 D810 and D4 D3 as Pro cameras? much the same as the D200, D300 in DX were called pro? Should the D600, D610, and D750 really be called "Pro" with their scene modes, and U1 U2 knobs? And what about the DF what the heck is that?

So should there then be a PRO FX forum and an amateur FX

I don't understand why? Are pros incapable of using a camera with scene mode? I think they are smart enough to ignore it. I used a D300 and D700 before an now sold the and use a D7100 and D750. I get paid for some of my photos. Does that make me a pro or not because of the camera I use? Also the non-pro cameras are better in some respects than the pro cameras. Finally a lot of beginners buy pro cameras and don't know much about photography. Have you read some of the posts lately?

We were in Sedona having lunch and I started chuckling cause this guy in line had a D4 with a 24-70. Nice camera. Nice lens. Pricey equipment right. When my wife asked me why I was laughing I said that the only reason I noticed was because his yellow and black strap said "Nikon D4" and the only reason anyone would put that strap on was to let EVERYONE know he'd just dropped 7K on camera equipment. I mean the guy can't afford a 40 buck comfortable strap? The pros I know roll their eyes when I tell them that story

My point is, the equipment sure don't make you a pro (and neither does the strap). I have some very good equipment and I sure wouldn't consider myself a pro.

While I understand and agree with your whining about scene modes, I fail to see anything wrong with U1/U2. And Df deserves own forum, as least to rid off all naysayers :-)

the manufacturers are the ones who put 'pro', 'prosumer', 'entry level' etc on the cameras. a pro gets the camera he/she needs regardless of the label. I've never had a client ask what camera I use.

Finally some like-minded people....

I agree with this but with some tweaks:

- Only D8x0 and Dx (no DF and no D700) accepted

- You HAVE to have 1.4 primes (all of them) and the 2.8 zooms. Only Nikkors will do, no amateurish 3rd party lenses

- You have to demonstrate ownership of camera and lenses by posting the receipt to the moderator

- Above all, you must NEVER take or post pictures of anything, other than focus charts (welcome), white walls or night skies , depending if looking for oil spots or thermal noise (accepted), or -if absolutely necessary- cats or kitchens. This extremely discouraged but accepted under special circumstances

That way we can finally get rid of all those pesky amateurs who believe that because their camera says "FX", they are "PRO". Pffff!!. When will they understand that you have to have an FX camera AND spend a LOT of money to be a REAL "PRO".

Can we also make the forum private? Thanks

You forgot the secret handshake.

I'm an amateur, and I have a D800 with 3 prime lenses and the golden three zoom lenses. I have a BMW car with > 300pk, but I'm not a professional racer. I can continue with many lines of text like this.

I think most PROS are not participating in this forum.

So what will separation based on camera types exactly give as an advantage?

There is a pro forum. I suggest you take your high and mighty self over there before you become contaminated.

You don't get to decide what are the needs of every pro; also because it is clear that you are not a pro ;-)

"Pro" is something of a misnomer when it comes to photography; strictly speaking, is it an occupation or a trade and not a profession.

Maybe, therefore, you could call the forums "tradesman's cameras" and "popular cameras". The problem with this is that working photographers cover a very wide spectrum and used a wide range of cameras. DX, FX, MF, film, etc. etc. it seems sensible to s segregate on sensor size only and accept that there are only about five occupational photographers in total on DPR so further segregation beyond that point serves only to fuel pretence.

at a recent exhibition (specialising in woodworking) someone who was a tradesman came up to me and enquired about my camera and photography. 'What's the best camera to get'? he said.

I said I could not answer that for him.. I didn't know what he needed one for. I mentioned DPR's forums and that you can spend £7000 on just a camera body.

That reminded him of the forums he goes onto regarding woodworking and equipment. He said you can pay £120 for a chisel. No Professional (or tradesman) would ever buy such a tool because it doesn't do anything better than the usual ones but more importantly in case they might leave it on a job.

It's not the equipment. No one would ever ask the carpenter if he had the latest chisel and how much it costs.

Conversely there are many self styled carpenters who are really chippies.. (a name given to less skilled person who is not in the same professional league)

So the entry to the Pro forum is to be based on "How much did you pay for your chisel.. err camera, mate"?

How long before this thread is locked or reaches 149?

Wow, your ego is really huge, isn't it?

One post less long since you asked, and I just responded...

Pass the hammer, would you?

That's odd. I haven't changed my D800 strap because I find it comfortable! And, frankly, I don't give a damn what people think of my choice of camera and strap.

When I see rolling eyes I assumed it was because they're on something, but I'll know if future that they professional photographers.

I am not a pro but I use the supplied strap because it is the correct size for my needs, I have no concern what people think about the logo sometimes being on show, just why should I or anyone else waste our money on a replacement to do the same job, maybe your comments show your own insecurities ? I cannot understand why you get amusement because someone is proud of their ownership of a fine camera ?

Agreed, not only those straps are uncomfortable (they bruise your neck, make you sweat, etc) but they're also terrible when you want to be incospicuos (E.G. D750 + a 50mm) and go to do some street photography... Then you have that YELLOW FLUORESCENT THING around your neck that makes you nearly as visible as a road worker wearing a high visibilty jacket... You can get a comfortable plain black neoprene strap from Optech for like 20-25 bucks...

You've started two threads since becoming a member and this was one of them....way to go!
