Care to share your experiences, benefits, annoyances? Mine is on order.

I suppose it depends what you're coming from... I was coming from a6000
  • APSC crop mode is only about 5.3MP - thats 6.67in x 8.89in at 300PPI (recommended resolution for close up viewing such as magazine photos)... can probably do an 8x10 with decent enlargement program
  • FPS is very slow compared to a6000
  • Recover significantly more highlights/shadows while retaining quality
  • Great ability to focus in extreme low light even without the AF assist light
  • Noise at high ISO is very low (51200 is ok for me). But must shoot raw and apply some reduction (JPG is too mushy for my liking)
  • No PDAF so has some CDAF backfocus issues... AF is fast still but not a6000 fast
  • Manageable 12MP files are great
  • Built solid... put the 70-200G on it and it will still feel solid unlike the a6000
  • Comes with the same annoying sticky strap
  • Same poor battery
Got mine for a steal of a price so I can't really complain :D

Ive managed to find a grey import for £1300 in the UK, and like you say its a bit of a steal. The super high ISO is a real appeal because it means I can then get away with slower lenses like the 35mm 2.8 as I rarely want shallow DoF for side angles anyway.

Till yesterday, I was only a Canon shooter. Bought the A7S today.

Would be very interested to hear your thoughts once you settle in!

yeah apsc crop mode is pretty small, but ive had fun using the 16/2.8 and the 0.75 wa adapter! cant wait for the 16-35 fe!

51,200 is my auto iso high limit.

i also have focus lightoff and it focuses great in low light

file size is SO wonderful!

feels fine with my 70-200 as well

who ever uses a strap that comes with a camera anyways?!

the battery feels better than my olympus em1 for life span, tho mebbe its that it shows % number as well... who is to say!

it took me a few days to stop trying to press the shutter using the front dial lol

Anyone missing the resolution? I worry I wont be able to shoot stuff like this

Mine arrives Friday. I currently have a Canon 5D Mk III, and love it. I expect I'll love the ɑ7s as well. I expect it will be my primary travel system.

Oh yeah the shutter is a little different... minor annoyance... when you press it on the a6000 (or older nex's) from half press... it's responsive like clicking a mouse.... on the a7 range there is a bit more 'mush' to it - sort of like the old resistive touch screens found on photocopiers or GPS.

Not sure why... seems like extra rubber, so perhaps for better weather sealing/durability. While shooting I didn't really notice to be honest and probably just pressed harder subconsciously to compensate... but if you're conscious about it, it will probably drive you crazy :D

Beware of very slow startup of about 8 seconds of grey import hacked ones. I can live with that (for the price) but it is annoying...

I have one and use it for video, mainly with a Samyang 24 f1.4. I have auto ISO set to 102k max and with my custom picture profile it can pretty much see in the dark.

I have projects where I have to print at some larger sizes. My current exhibit is 18" wide prints on metal. I envision 24" wide and even 30". How large can the A7s print at full quality?

Is the startup slower because the camera has to display the "camera is in NTSC mode" warning image?

I recall the native NTSC a7s having pretty slow start-ups as well, although the warning image seems to double it.

I have both the A7R and A7S. The A7R is great for those occasions where I really need higher resolution to bring out more detail or for severe crops.

However, the A7S is definitely my walk-around camera. Quiet. Low light performance. 12 MP is more than adequate. A really nice "feel" to the images. Great video on those occasions I might want a clip or two.

My only peeve is slow autofocus with adapters and I only own one Sony lens (of any type). I adapter Canon EF & FD, Pentax, Minolta, Tamron, Sigma, M42 and T2 lenses to both Sony bodies. Image quality is superb and I'm getting a lot better at manual focusing...

Battery life is not the best but it comes with a couple of batteries and I also use a 110 volt power adapter for those long time-lapses, etc.

Sony's Camera Apps are an interesting addition to the camera. The Time-Lapse and Star Trails apps are useful. Yes, I'm an astro-imager and nightscape photographer. There are several remote timers and shutter controls now available.

I like both cameras, each has its own niche with a fair bit of overlap.

don't have one, but i really want one!

pricewise it's just too far out of range right now because i'm taking some international trips soon, but honestly my A6000 is doing a fine job in the meantime.

How large you can print and retain a sharp image depends on viewing distance(eg: 1 metre vs billboard), the medium (metal in your case) and resolution (12.2MP for A7s). Different mediums show or hide more detail.

With enlargements... this is where high MP matters. How many MP is your current camera? A7s dimensions is 4240 x 2832. You need to determine the PPI required for your viewing environment and metal. I've printed a canvas at 100ppi at actual size and it was good... the texture and ink hid the details and canvasses are generally viewed at 1+ metre.
I use MPix Pro for my printing needs. They provide a chart with optimal resolution for prints. For example, my 12" x 18" prints need 3000 x 4500. However, the A7s would fit into the minimum requirements for decent prints and that is true up to 24 x 36, it appears (and that does seem far fetched). I have yet to go below their optimal resolution numbers. I suppose I should try one before I dismiss it (and certainly the material being used plays into the equation). Thanks.

It's not a proper DPR test unless you have 1 of a cat and 1 of a kid in Disneyland....

I got a7s with 28-70 - 3 weeks ago and i have shot around 50 photos with. Coming from Nex-6 my observations are.
  • Robust body, very secure mount.
  • Very nice EVF
  • Really good focus in low light.
  • 5 stop HDR Bracketing (finally!).
  • Pretty good moisture resistance.
  • The 28-70 packs some impressive performance.
  • Crop mode is kinda useless, those 5mp images are below acceptable.
  • 12mp files are great - have a touch of medium format feel.
  • Low Light capability that blows away everything.
  • Wonderful Image Pop on photos like the one below.

The diffuse trigger is common on many high end cameras. It's there to minimize the risk of camera shake right at the moment of the shot. When shooting in silent mode on the A7S, it is a weird feeling since the only feedback is a short EVF blackout. If you happen to blink at that moment, you don't know if you took the shot or not. :)
