Pool pics- AI Servo is great! (3 pics)

Poberta,

None of your photos needed or benefited by using AI Servo or AI Focus. They would have been just as sharp if shot in the one shot mode. They are great shots with beautiful stop action that is the result of fast shutter speed. AI Servo only is of benefit if the subject is moving toward the camera or away from it at a significant rate of speed. There is movement in these pictures but not toward/away from the camera.

Keep shooting though. They are good pictures.
I wanted to check out AI SERVO with some pool pics. The first shot
(AI Servo) was taken with the 28-135 IS and the second (AI Focus)
and third (AI Servo) were taken with the Canon 100mm f2.8 macro.
The AI Servo works great and both lenses performed well. I love
this camera!!

pictures in Photoshop or any other program? If you did, could you please post an image straight from your camera. I am still up in the air about my 10D and if it has a problem. I usually have to post process to get images almost this good and I have very good glass.

Hi George,

Thank you for your comments. My manual says on page 66 "AI SERVO for Moving Subjects:This AF mode suits moving subjects when the focusing distance keeps changing. (They were jumping all around in pics #1 and #3) It goes on to say that "With predictive AF, the camera can also focus track a subject which steadily approaches or retreats from the camera."

My subjects were not moving toward or away from the camera but they were jumping and splashing and their focusing distance was changing. I know that a high shutter speed freezes action but AI SERVO helps to follow a moving subject by using the seven focusing points.

By the way, ONE SHOT should only be used for still subjects. See page 65 of the manual. If you use ONE SHOT and your subject moves even a small amount, your image will be blurry. ONE SHOT would not be good for these photos. I took a few on one shot when they were just floating in the pool but the slight movement caused blur.

The 10D did very well with exposure too. It's a great camera!
Thanks,
Roberta

Hi Ben,

Yes I did post process in PhotoShop 6.0. I will post the originals out of camera at my pbase gallery but give me a few minutes and I will post a link for you too.

Nice shots Roberta. I have to agree with George on most of his points. You really didn't need AI Servo for these shots. It is most needed for shooting bursts where there is movement toward or away from the camera. Using it sure didn't hurt these shots though. BTW I routinely use one shot shooting sports like softball where I focus on the base where I expect the action to occur. I also shoot batters and pitchers with one shot. I switch to AI Servo for base runners and defensive plays where the fielder is moving toward or away from me.

Thank you Roberta, that is about what I get right out of the camera. Sure puts my mind at ease. I see one of those shots was at ISO400, a little gutsie for me but looks terrific.

Most of my work is weddings and I still send my digital files to a Lab for proofs. It is difficult to do post processing on 200 to 300 images prior to having proofs made. I haven't been real happy with the 4x6 prints from digital, I think my proofs from film were much better. The enlargements from the digital files are top notch (after the usual post processing). I haven't had any complaints about the proofs from my clients but I feel I have to explain what I see as less quality than what I expect. It may also be the Lab I'm using.
Thank you again for your help.
Hi Ben,
Here's the link. I posted four out-of-camera, two of them are 100%
crops.
I also have a few 100% crops in my 10D gallery- click on the link
below my name for the other galleries. Let me know if this helps!

John,
Very interesting that you are able to use One Shot for batters and pitchers.

I'll have to try One Shot more often to see what I get. I've used AI Focus a lot with good results. Thanks for your comments!

Ben,

Post processing all of those proofs would be hours of work. I have created some Actions in PS6 but I find that many times, I process them individually.

If you show your clients an example of a proof and a finished piece, I'm sure they will understand that the finished image will be much higher quality.

if people are jumping up and down, the one shot will require a focus lock for the shot to take

Of course, if people are jumping up and down the focus may never lock. So you were correct that this is a situation that ai servo is perfect for

Basically - if your subjects are moving so that your camera won't lock - and that can be people jumping up and down - the AI servo can save the shot because the camera will always take the shot whether it's in focus lock or not. The camera will do it's best guess.

Thanks for posting these - my nephew is coming to visit next week and they'll be plenty of opportunity for pool shots. I will definitely try both lenses and play with AI SERVO. My nephew is 2 1/2 so there is no sitting still! Also, great to see the before and after post-processing.

Thanks again for posting.
Best,

I love these "frozen water" pool shots as well, I would like to see a thread with more of these type shots posted with lens and settings info.

Roberta,

This has been a very instructive thread. Thanks for starting it, and thanks to others for their insights and even their disagreements. Good stuff.
