I don't want to stir emotions or brand loyalties (those could be eventually be justified if someone is an employee of that brand). Then this is NOT a review of any kind, just thoughts in a rainy late afternoon with two good super zoom P&S cameras, one of them an old friend, the other an only two days acquaintance.

Now what I absolutely like at P600: the "matrix" AF, which can get everywhere on the screen in different shapes :) ; I have a feeling that that could be outrageous to professionals, but it reminds me of my old Oly "toys" (SP-800 and 810UZ).

What I absolutely dislike at P600: when checking the zoomed images, not only I can't go from an image to the other (have to push OK, to revert to the 1:1 size), but zooming in an image starts with a second of display blackout, then you're directly at the 3X size :( Absurd!

There are many small differences: the AF format remains at the last selection to P600, but reverts to AF to SX50; to P600 there are more information on the screen, but in smaller fonts, etc. (still to be discovered :) )

Now enough idle talk and to the main questions (at least for me): IQ and IS. I think they are pretty the same. At the telephoto end P600 images appear darker and that is quite in accord with some graphics I saw here. I tried to have likely settings, but not hard enough (e.g. at wide end forgot Canon to RAW+JPEG, meaning native JPEG). P600 is on Vivid, D-lighting on. All images with ISO AUTO, limited to 800, hand held and SOOC, of course. At the telephoto end, three images each, selected the best, like in sport competitions :)

It's up to you to decide...

First my dear old SX50:

Now my dear new P600:

hows about you do a sd card shot from 10 meters away and only use optical zoom

its very good that you are doing this for us all to see, some and including me have thought about the nikon but have not got any further

Thank you for commenting! I forgot to say, it's optical zoom only :) ! I've seen also that P600 at ISO 500 is noisier than SX50 at ISO 800, but that could be not only because of more pixels (16 vs 12), but also because I let the default noise reduction. Probably I should have selected NR+.

I admit this is a hasty comparison, as I didn't work with P510 since almost two years and I forgot the best settings of Nikon P&S cameras. Hopefully people there will help me also...

All the best,

Augustin

and i am finding the fz1000 inteligent zoom works very well,my next mission to find some birds in flight

Augustin,

These are the settings I use, hope the new camera works out for you.

Nikon P600 Settings

These are the camera settings I use and as you can see they are all mostly the cameras defaults. I do use a tripod or a monopod most of the time and I think that is why I get pretty good IQ, but it looks like some of the other P600 users do very good hand held.

· ISO - 100 almost always, have used 200 as well and pictures turned out good

· Exposure Compensation, -0.3

· AF Area Mode - Manual (Normal) - If you press OK you can move it around, it also can change exposures

· Autofocus Mode - Single AF

· Noise Reduction - Low

· Active D Lighting - OFF

· Startup Zoom Position - 50

· Image Quality - Fine

· Image Size - 16M 4608X3456

· Picture Control - Standard

o Contrast +1

o All others centered

· White Balance - AUTO1

· Metering - Matrix - Sometimes Center depending on lighting conditions

· Vibration Reduction and Motion Detection - I leave mine on at all times, it says to turn it off if you’re using a tripod but I don’t see any difference.

· AF Assist - OFF

· Digital Zoom - OFF

Hello Augustin!

Wide angle .... You do not stand in the same place .... one meter big difference!

Is the lamp housing white or blue?

Yes, P600 is more expressive .....

Thank you very much, Mark!

That's exactly what I need. I was ready to start again my P510 to check the settings there :)

Happy shooting,

Augustin

Thank you for commenting! As I've already said, this is not a review: I was standing on the balcony not necessarily in the same place. The lamp is grey ( :) ), but the light has been already low...

Grey? That means nothing is good!

Just kidding ...... :-)

These were my thoughts posted on the Nikon forums comparing these shots between the Nikon P600 and Canon sx50.

"Its hard to choose between the two.

I pixel peeped too. I will now nitpick. The Nikon has a brighter cooler demeanour, the canon is darker and warmer demeanour. The details seems similar - I looked at the distant houses and it looked similar detail on the bricks. The Nikon is overall slightly sharper. When I pixpeeped the light, it was interesting the canon has a slightly cleaner picture, less noise.

Very close overall - its probably comes down to personal preference - slightly brighter sharper image of the Nikon or the warmer richer colors of the canon which maybe a touch cleaner too."

Cheers

Steve.

Hi Augustin,

Thanks for this info. I'm in the same situation as you - after a year of waiting I'm pretty disappointed with what Canon have come up with, in the form of the SX60.

So I'm now going to get another SX50, or possibly one of the other contenders, namely the P600 or HX400.

Would it be possible (once you've had a bit more time with the Nikon) to put up a list of likes/dislikes for the SX50 vs the P600?

Cheers,

Mike.

Thank you, Steve!

I replied there, but it's not bad to repeat here I have the same opinion as you :)

Thank you for looking and commenting, Mike! Unfortunately I have not enough knowledge yet about P600 to give you a right and complete answer. What I've remarked until now is a truly fantastic IS - they call it "vibration reduction". The major drawback besides the lack of RAW seems to be the noise at lower ISO than SX50. As far as I saw samples, HX400 seems a very capable camera, but I don't like Sony colors, that's all...

A cursory solution is to use DPP to PP the images. I'll put some examples in a thread on the Nikon Coolpix forum soon.

All the best,

Augustin
