20mm f/1.8G

According to local shop here in Amsterdam (NL), this lens should be shipped out on 27th September which is next Saturday (nice thing is that if offered with free extension to 5 year warranty which goes beyond 2 year that we get in EU).

While I never own it, I heard from one of my ex co-workers that 20mm f2.8 he had was very nice lens (and quite cheap too).

Apparently, according to latest NR rumor, 20mm f/1.8 G version might appear now too. That might be interesting lens if price attractive (eg. I might not consider 18-35, but rather this prime instead). What price would you expect on such lens?

So, what is everyone going to use this lens for? That, to me, is the big question while I decide whether or not to purchase this lens. The lens that I usually use to cover this focal length is the 14-24 f2.8G, but it is somewhat big and heavy. I shoot with a D810. Thanks, everyone!
My 14~24 in landscapes and cityscapes is usually part of my kit. The size and weight is less of an issue to me then it's inability to use GND's without going very expensive and bulky systems. I had been on the edge of purchasing one of those systems but now this lens will provide me much, being lighter and excepting filters. This is as long as it is a fair amount better than the 20D which I could have bought at a very attractive used price but the IQ results from my test were disappointing.

This lens will be very affordable for me considering what I might have been willing to pay to get that filter system for my 14~24.

Like Larry and yourself Ray, I too move the Zeiss 21 on shortly after purchase...

I love the images I got from it but, I guess having recently moved from mirrorless it just seemed way to big and heavy on the Df.

As with Rexgig0, I'm happy with my 18 2.8D but I'm eager to see the samples of the new 20.

This could be THE lens that sits on the Df 99% of the time... Will the 18 be knocked of its perch in my world? If its a good as the Fuji XF 14mm... you will have one very happy customer here Nikon.

Yes, for me having the Fuji 14 works well along their kit 18~55. Now with this new 20mm I will have a very nice combination which will be my newer Nikon trinity.

I took delivery of my 20 mm today, its seems well built, not flimsy or too plastic like. The AF is very crisp and the f1.8 is very bright in the viewfinder of my D800.

I shot some this afternoon a bit and will download after dinner and look the files over.

Please be sure to post samples if you're able!

I got a shipping notice from B&H this morning. Based on that, I do believe it actually exists and is in a box in NYC at this moment. And I'll have it tomorrow barring shipping problems - I'm within the overnight zone from New York and I've only had a package from B&W take longer than that once, when it got hung up at a transfer point.

Lucky it shipped today - if it had been a day later, I'd have had to wait for them to return from holiday next week... Which wouldn't have been the worst thing in the world, but if this lens is near as good as it sounds like it will be, it's gonna be on my Df a LOT... So I'm psyched to get started with it...

Tell us all about it when you have it delivered.

I got mine this afternoon. I took one shot in the camera store, looked at it at 100% and everything looked excellent at an f stop of 3.3. I brought it home and took another couple shots in the house with great results, noticed no corner shading at an f 3.3 and sharp as a tack of course with no fine tuning. I registered it on the Nikon site and am ready to go shooting. I have ordered from my local camera store especially for new releases and have had better luck than if I used the internet.

I did notice that the close up ability is great for the minimum focus distance.

Good luck Ray.

(And yes, I know...20mm is rarely a flattering portrait focal length)

And a crop from the above -no sharpening...just imported as Raw and exported as jpg:

Looks sharp. Not seeing much 'loca' in that either.

Very wide, sharp, fast and good bokeh. Nikon actually breaking new ground in lens design? Getting all of these features in one lens has always been a challenge. It probably beats the 7 year old Sigma 20mm f1.8 in LoCA and no doubt other areas, though I have seen some pretty good images out of the older lens, which can be got on the second hand market for around half the price of the Nikkor (it also has an aperture ring for liveview use on the D6x0, which is another plus)

I got the lens a couple of hours ago. It's raining buckets so I didn't take it out today, but I did a few shots around the house and tried to match a shot I'd done with the Zeiss 21mm a few weeks back. Lightroom doesn't have a lens profile for this lens yet, needless to say, so I used the one for the old 20mm f2.8 D and it's close enough for the moment.

So here's a shot of our kitchen, dining room, and living room, first with the Nikon at f1.8, and then with the Nikon and Zeiss at f2.8. The Nikon is a bit wider, but the difference between 20 and 21 is a bit more obvious than I'd expected. You can see that these shots line up pretty well on the right side, but the Nikon gives a good bit extra FOV to the left. I focussed around the faucet and flowers with the Nikon - I obviously was focussed farther back, maybe the dining table, with the Zeiss. Because the foreground is less in focus and the background much more in focus with the Zeiss. Sorry about that - I guess I didn't remember where I'd focussed a few weeks back and didn't check closely enough before I tried to replicate that shot today.

In any case, the Nikon isn't the Zeiss, but I think I'll be really happy with it. I like the size, weight, feel of the lens a lot - it's a lot better suited to the way I shoot than the Zeiss was. And it's quite sharp, even wide open, pretty good out to the corners. Probably not a good idea to compare it to a nearly perfect lens, but this is the only shot that will probably happen on...

I can't believe the depth of field you get with a 20mm lens at f/1.8. You say you are focused on the foreground sunflowers, yet the background is only unsharp, not really blurry. I guess the f/1.8 is for light gathering, not for bokeh freaks.

Anyway, thanks for your post.
