Hi all,

I am purchasing a Canon A70 and found a great price on a standard 256mb Sandisk CF card, but after contemplating the purchase I realized that my new, faster camera, may indeed work better with an accelerated CF card.

Does anyone know how big of a difference an good quality Lexar, Viking, or Kingston CF card will make in a Canon A70 compared to a standard Sandisk card?

cheers

David

Hi

I've allso got a A70, and the camera simply gets quicker ready for the next picture with a high speed CF-card. For instance: You can take more pictures in "Burst Mode". I've not tried a traditional CF-card - but the salesman recomended a high-speed CF-card (PQI High Speed).

If you don't take burst pictures then theres really no point in paying a lot more for a faster FC.

The two things you will get from a higher speed CF are faster recovery from burst....my 128 mb Mr. Flash card takes 25 or so seconds to write after an 11 shot burst and my new Kingston takes about 12....or movies and it will be faster downloading through a CF reader into your computer. Right now I would not buy a CF at full price from a big electronic store. There are too many websites running big specials right now (my Kingston 256 meg cards were $25 each)

I ordered them from Dell.com They were 50 something then I got 15% off and free shipping and they come with a $20 mail in rebate. There is a limit of something around 4-5 rebates per person/household, but if you don't need more than a gig of space it was a great way to go.

Just ordered a kingston card from dell, $32 after rebate. I was
charged some TAX, is Dell based in Washington state?
They are based in TX. There's a list of states (about 5) on their site, that they charge tax in.

Regards..

If you order through small business section they collect tax for all taxing states I believe, unless you fax/mail them a copy of your tax exemption certificate (if applicable). Orders through the Home section may not have sales tax collected by them.

Hi Jon, I saw the special offer on Dell too. I'm confused about the speed of that Kingston 256M CF. In its highlight it says the speed is 99,000. I don't know what it refers to. I also found it declares "3.5 MBps Media Transfer Rate" in its "256M CF + card adaptor" deal. Does it mean it's a 23.3x speed card? I'm lost at here. Could you help me out with your experience on the Kingston card? Thanks.

I have observed the Kingston transfer rate (in a Sandisk CF reader) to be about a picture (1.2 MB) per second, or a bit slower. Should be able to upload lots of 1MB files to the CF card and read them back pretty easily, to test the speed.

I tried to lookup the PN from Dell, on a Kingston website. No luck. Called the TS an was told that the speed was about 12X.

By comaparison to Sandisk (w/o speed designation), the Kingston seems a bit faster in CF reader to PC over USB1. It also was a hair faster in the tests on this site. Of course, like other products, are you getting what was tested a few months ago? Most likely not.

Kingston CF's uses different controoller than Sandisk (which uses Sandisk).

I'm a little annoyed with the CF makers. They are selling millions of units and cannot agree on some designation.

Thanks for your info. I'll order the Kingston then. I do have a Sandisk card reader, which is a combined offer w/ my Sandisk 128M CF, and felt it's easier and faster to transfer images through the readr than the camera itself. The Sandisk card is not that impressively speedy to me. I also own a Lexar 12x 128M CF but just started to use it so have no experience.

Have a nice day!

I am not sure exactly how fast it is in x speed...I will tell you that transferring a 13,231 KB file from my computer to the card took 1 1/2 minutes through my HP Photosmart Printer. I also checked moving it back also which took about 47 seconds. I am not sure what the equates to, but it is pretty fast! Hope this helps

As a side note I spent a while on the phone with the rebate people today to make sure that I filled out their forms correctly and didn't get screwed out of my money and they told me that if you order more than one CF all you do is fill out a single form and attach all of the UPC's and your receipt in one envelope and they will do all the rebates.
