Is anyone else curious about.......

what other NTF members look like, do or did......besides post on
the forum and take photos?
Well as I said earlier I am much more behind the cameras than in
front. It does take me some nerve to come up with a shot of me
that I enjoy. Now I did take this one not too long ago. Just me
hard at work. Ok I admit I did adjust it just a tad. But if you
squint one eye.... well

Vocation is Green Coffee Commodities Coordinator. Advocation,
passion, and second job I am a professional potter. Cheaper than
therapy. Finally love of photography.

No Sheila, did that before I learned the Hayes Island effect. In fact I can't remember which I used but it was using one of the options to set it like a sketch etch and then just dithered out much of the detail. I used that one on a business card.

I'm brave. I have a whole page of scanned photos, many pretty funny, going back to about 1955 at http://www.coastalfog.net/personal/noself.html . You can watch the hair disappear over time.

Here's my favorite, taken at the NCO Club in Grant Heights, Japan, in 1972, along with my wife, May:

Born in Raccoon Bend, TX. Grew up in small towns and oil camps all over Texas and the Gulf Coast. Flunked out of Southwestern Univ. twice while switching majors from Chemistry to Biology to Art to Psychology. Joined the Army in 1962. Graduated in 1982. Spent 20 months in Taiwan and 7.5 years in Japan (in two tours), working mostly as a translator (Chinese and Japanese). After retiring from the Army, spent one year resting up, 5 years running a computer-controlled engraving machine, and 15 years as a Mac programmer (community college AS). Now unemployed. Married for 37 years. Not necessarily in that order.

I'll take that as a compliment if you don't mind. and yes I was born on 30th April 1980 :P

To try and answer your question without sounding crazy, I'm generally a reasonably serious person. Very dry sense of humour etc. Not that I can't have fun, but ... I don't know. Just seem to get on well with older people a lot of the time. 5 years of painstaking uni (I have my mech eng degree in mind here), late nights and a healthy dose of reality seem to have helped.

I'm not sure if I hate having my photo taken, just ... I'm usually using the camera myself. I had some photos taken during graduation last year - I'll t ry dig a decent one of those out - just I think they may not be scanned.
only 23??? How can you be that young and that talented and mature
of vision?? It's enough to make me toss it all in ;)

As for me, I too hate having my photo taken--I think the last one I
have is about 10 years old. What is it about photographers, they
hate being on the other side of the camera. There must be a
psychological reason for this....

You may be onto something Dayane. Our own ideas of composition and perhaps a need to be control freaks for all those bells and whistles. I think this would be the case especially with point and shooters, however what about s.o. who you know and like as a photographer? Is the lack of control enough of a reason?

Well, I had a cousin was an extraordinary photographer, and her
thing was, she doen't like having her picture taken either because
she knows how she wants the photo to be and she has a vision, but
then someone just points and shoots and she hates her photos that
way L I guess I'm the same way. THere's like a huge period of my
life where there are NO photos of me because I just refused to be
in them. I only started to take pics of me now to get my family in
Oz off my back L I already live half a world away, if I don't
give them pics they'll send someone after me :(

So maybe photographers just have a vision of how they want their
pictures to be and then they've been dissapointed far too many
times with snap shots of them from other people they just have this
dislike to be in front of the camera.

Just a thought :)

Cheers,
Dayane.

Jim, I don't throw on a wheel, I do it the hard way...molds. I have about 300 different pots. I do modify them any way I can so they don't look like what they started out as. It is therapy. I do about 6-8 art festivals a year. It keeps me out of the malls and gives me money to buy cameras. :> ) I like the "actions" also.
Thanks for being brave and sharing.

Here's another link to a thread a few months back that had self-portraits of forum members.

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1007&message=4382013

I've posted mine there, too...so I thought I'd supply the link instead of reposting the shot.

These are always fun threads - it's always good to see everyone again and learn the new faces, too.

I especially like the threads that Sheila posted - those were really a great way to get to know everyone!

Deanne,

Nice thread...it's been a while since I posted an image of myself here, very busy coding, eating, exercising and sleeping!

Here I am:

(taken with CP990)

31, Born and raised in Brooklyn NYC by Haitian parents (I was taken there once as a toddler, hope to go visit soon.) Attended St. Theresa catholic school from 3 to 8. Passed specialized HS exam to get into Brooklyn Tech in 85, graduated 89. Went off to college, loitered around College of Staten Isl. and City College, Grad. BS EE 1997. While in college did almost as much drawing and art learning as I did engineering (guess that's why i took so long!) Worked on campus for a year as a LAN admin, then off to Chase for two years as a Y2k tech. then 2 years at a dot.bomb as a xml/java/tcl/sql content management programmer. Started company(Apriority LLC) in 2002, imminent release of first product. (xml content management and delivery engine) My first passion is illustration, been drawing since I could pick up a pencil, here's a graphite sketch I did during my digital electronics class circa 96' ;)

However, I've been unable to devote much time to illustration, programming has taken over..luckily I love it just as much, to help satisfy the periodic art craving I got into digital imagery back in 96 using the Kodak DC90 purchased by the computer lab I was working at, since then I've owned the DC260 (Kodak) and now the amazing 990. I've since given the 260 to my girlfriend who is more often than not the primary subject of my photographs, along with flowers, buildings, wildlife, friends and family. Another interest is exercise, to loose some excess pounds acquired during my 5 year stint in "the field" I started running 3+ miles almost every day since last September, I hit my goal of loosing 50lbs by January!...whoda thunk that running and fat concious meals could flatten a gut (no crunches required yay!!) now I have more energy to code, draw and take pictures!

be no photos of me without my husband.

That is about the number of shows I do also. I love throwing and making every piece a bit different. I don't even weigh out my clay anymore just to make sure things don't come out too uniform. I really enjoy developing my glazes though. I make all my own and love to open the kiln and get surprised. Plus as you say, it sure helps in buying my other toys.

So nice to put a face to those lovely photos. This thread has been so much fun for me and I hope for everyone. The only ones I knew what they looked like were Jarrell (he's not the least bit camera shy), Dayane, Frank Lemire and Todd Art.

I think I should learn someday to use my scanner. These baby pics have been a hoot. Thanks for posting.
