iphoto does anyone use it here?

most inefficient application in the universe?

it has conceptual flaws. For those with small digi cams and up to 1000 photos maybe it's OK.

For a serious user it's a serious waste of time.

because it's horribly slow with more than a couple hundred photos in it, particularly if they're of the sort of resolution that the 10D gives. It also can't handle RAW files or any editing that's really worth mentioning.

well, at least that's why I don't use it....

I have a policy of "NO FILE MANAGEMENT" on my macs as they are awful at it, slow and clunky and if I transfer round gigabytes of data it goes slower and slower until I stop it and do it on my PC.

For some of the trickier colour management issues on images I go to the macs as I like the profiled screen better than the PC.
nczen,

I remember reading about iView before but because I didn't have a
need for it I moved on. Time for me to take another (serious) look.
Thanks again

PC's are not an option for me right now. Anyway I've got to get busy and look for better software.

CaffineSoft is no longer running, but you can download the last version and it works really well.

on my g4/500. handles hundreds of pics, inclueding raw. but...i only use it for cataloging, the image tools are kinda clunky. creates web pages and contact sheets easy enough and works really well to organize pics.

I've been using a Mac since '85. I've tried using iPhoto and I can't figure out who they think is going to use that stuff. But a friend of mine who is an AP staff photographer uses it for his personal stuff and likes it a lot.

I got to use Photo Mechanic during America 24/7, and I love it. I bought the software and use it constantly. It is simple, intuitive, and it will handle monster amounts of pictures.

The Apple stuff is too cute. They need to get back to basics.

As does a friend that just switched to the Mac. It is simple, fast (It is much faster then when first released), and works pretty well.

But it is not designed for the people that might exist on this board.

I posted this ( http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1017&message=5402771 ) on the Mac Tools forum the other day.

For those that want a different alternative for managing multiple iPhoto Libraries (really helps speed things up), I rolled my own. It's not perfect, but it beats any of the others I had tried--at least in my opinion. ;-)

So I posted it for download. Documentation is a bit sparse (I'm workin on that), so peruse the vairous pages of the website:

iPhoto is slow. It seems to be just as slow on my iBook 800 and a Dual 1.4 PowerMac. For me it is not unusable.

To speed things up, you need to organize your pictures by film roll. Then just open the rolls that you are working on. This helps big time. BTW, to open or close all film rolls hold down the OPTION key and click on film roll's arrow. I have a 10D with 3000 images in iphoto. Another thing to help speed things up is turn off the drop shadow on thumbnails. This helps a bunch also.

I only shoot JPG and don't mind the none RAW stuff. iPhoto can work with Photoshop files, so when I do RAW stuff I just save the RAW into photoshop and then import into iPhoto.

For sending e-mails, simple websites, and organizing your photos it works well. If you can make these changes and live with the slowness of the application it probably will work for you.
