Having read various rumour sites on the web, I am confused as to whether the GM5, due to be announced on Monday, has in-body IS or not.

It is a bit of a deal breaker, if not, as I have mostly non-IS lenses.

Any thoughts?

The IS in the GX7 is good for what, 1-2 stops when you are lucky? Any reason to suspect that in an even more compact body, this would be improved?

In any case we will know for sure in a few days' time :)

Have any of the Rumors mentioned why the "GM5" instead of "GM2"? What is the deal with leXaping digits? I understand the leap between GX1 and GX7, but what is the reasoning this time? Is the new one going to make toast and mix drinks?

By the way, that was 'leaping' not LeXaping.... new one to me....

No, I think LeXaping was much more appropriate. Camera and lens manufacturers can't help but to throw random X's into their product names.

Yes, I think you should wait and find out.

LOL!!!

12 hours to go! Quite exciting! :-D

(Dunno why, I've got an Olympus E-M5 + 4 lenses, but I want a more compact M4/3 camera).

Wait a few weeks for the reviews.

Hmmm...

I can see myself walking into LCE or Park Cameras in a couple of week's time to try the GM5's EVF.

If I can adjust the EVF to allow use without reading glasses, the Mastercard might take a beating...

It's a pity with no IBIS, but otherwise it looks absolutely gorgeous. I don't mind trading a pop-up flash for a proper hotshoe and a EVF.

Very interesting with the 1/16000 s minimum shutter time, though I find it odd with the fairly long shutter sync time of 1/50 s and the maximum shutter time of 60 s seems unnecessarily restrictive?

I think the new GM5 looks great. I am really looking forward to checking the EVF out.

I am most pleased that they managed to add on some nice upgrades without increasing the size significantly. The new model is slightly larger but the GM1 was so small that there was some wiggle room, at least for my tastes. I was afraid there would be too many add-ons and what I thought would be called the GM2 would include a tilting screen. I am always amused at "wish lists" for small cameras on the DPR. Usually when all the lists are complete they add up to something like the G7X.

I am a fairly new GM1 owner and very pleased with it. If the GM5's EVF is good I would consider an upgrade someday. In the meantime I will happily continue shooting with the original.

I'm starting to think I might as well get a GM1 if I am going to get either of the Panasonic GM models.

I'm not that fussed about the EVF. I would really like to have seen IBIS though, but it doesn't look like the GM5 offers it despite all the pre-launch rumours. Very disappointed with that.

There are some great deals for the GM1 around at present - vastly less than the cost of the new GM5.

Well, it's been announced but not a word about in-body IS - not that I can see anyway. :-(

Actually, the spec sheet in your link 2 says : "Image Stabilization - No"

Looks like a big improvement on the GM1, IMO. Nice!

This. After seeing the GM5, IMO the best thing about it is that it will bring the cost of the GM1 down. The GM1's control layout is already cramped, but workable - operating the GM5 looks like a small nightmare, with that dial and buttons just above the capacitative screen. Want to bet on how often it will register a press and move your focus to the edge when you're trying to work with it?

Also, a diminutive EVF (when the screen on this unit is SO good), and hotshoe with a 1/50 max sync speed is really lame (thanks, but it's so handicapped I'll stick to the built-in flash for casual use).

I'll wait for the GM10 to bring real better features.

The LX100 on the other hand looks like the M43 killer Sony always wanted the RX100 to be. :o

I was a relatively early GM1 adopter and fortunately got it at a good price back then. I'm not interested at all in the added GM5 features though I can understand a lot of people are and I think it is great Panasonic was able to tick so many boxes without a significant growth in the size. That said, for me extremely small size was what I was interested in and the additional height and thickness of the GM5 are more of a negative than the added features are a positive. But again, that's just me. I suspect many people will have exactly the opposite opinion.

So I'd say choosing the GM1 over the GM5 could make sense for a lot of folks. I've been delighted with mine, but I went in eyes wide open in understanding the handling trade offs of such a small body. The hardest decision really was paying for the GM1 when the EPM2 is so inexpensive. In the end talking to folks who have handled both I'm happy with my decision and given some really nice shots I've gotten in the past half a year that I would never have brought my E-M5 along to take I am also comfortable with having not waited for the price to drop.

Great to finally get to see the real GM5 and its specs after all the misinformation that was being spread about on rumor sits and here that it using only the small low rez EVF of LF1 or that it was coming with the old std kit lens etc and had nothing new?9

Quite amazing they managed to keep the size so small but as I suspected this meant going to lower height 16:9 screen. DPR seems to be impressed by the new high rez EVF as well as the touch LCD screen. I personally would miss the small popup flash even if that meant losing the hotshoe. Others have noted it likely has a new better and more capable shutter plus electronic shutter that the LX100 uses.

I am very surprised why Pany is not having a silver or white version of the GM5 but offering a red one and even a green one instead? After all with GM1 the orange version was the most popular followed by silver and black last in Japan? Good to see they will be offering a version with the fast wide angle lens but it should be on all markets including US.

The enthusiasm for the GM5 was blunted by the earlier false projections but I expect once the camera becomes available and more reviews and more people see and use it that it will become popular as DPR suggests. The GM5 is quite a bit smalller than the FZ100 in size and may likely compete well against high end fixed lens compacts like the RX100 as well as larger interchangeable mirrorless lens cameras. The GM5 was not meant to include everything and leaves room for the GX7 series above it with its tilt screen, larger moveable EVF, and IBIS.
