This is the sort of thing I would really like to try to accomplish. the first one is gentle and the low contrast refreshing. A calm and beautiful scene.

The second is not as comfortable, almost like black lightning. An inversion of a dark forest with a bolt of bright lightning. Somewhat more dark or brooding in affective tone, but strong and stirring.

Tolleknolle,

I prefer the top frame. Very nice. The black tree in the bottom one seems out of place and disturbing to the visual harmony of the soft scene.

I'm curious if the woods were foggy, or if you've done this in post processing.

Different. I like them both.

Thanks, Steve. Re. "disturbing the visual harmony" - or one might say offsetting the soft background, or standing in tension with it, also in terms of the lines, the rhythmic verticals in the background vs. the energetic V-shape in the foreground.

Well, both! The woods were misty to begin with and I decided to enhance the effect in PP. I then brought back the density in the most prominent trunks to give the scene some visual depth.

I prefer the top one without the black point changed. The bottom one, I like the contrast, Perhaps it might be better if the black tree was off-center somewhat.

I like both images.

The top one does not need a black in the pictures. This was the same criticism when I posted a similar image.

However, I much prefer the lower photograph, the black V-shaped tree is great, as is your cropping. If I had been there, I might have been tempted to rotate my camera to give this tree a little more room. Excellent.

Stunning images. Your choice of high key exposure bias is most interesting and really sets a mood. Well done I say.

It's clearly a matter of appeal to each of us, but I love that first image as you have first presented it. Shifting or stretching the tonal range changes it too much aesthetically for my eyes.

superb job.

the "black lightning" (good one Paul) image I'm undecided on.

Set Black Point

Set Black Point

a bit more than I was thinking I was just thinking the tree trunk bottom in the lower left would be enough this changes the mood a bit for me

If this is too much, then the effect would need to be done with burning in that area instead of setting a black point unless you duplicated the layer, set the black point and then masked that layer for the effect needed. Personally I prefer the black point set version. I would look at increasing the dreaminess and fog effect to see if I liked that version though.

as it already looks vignetted perhaps a black point can be created by gently increasing the vignette
