Hi,

I just got my Pentax Optio S and I am very dissapointed in the quality of the pictures it takes. I could not believe how noisy the pictures were compared to the pictures I've taken previously with Canon PowerShot s230.

I've read most of the threads related to Optio S and it's picture quality on this forum but I am still confused about the general opinion.

So does Optio S takes noisy pictures? I have fiddled around with the settings and tried out many logical combinations but I was unable to produce pictures that are as clear as pictures I am used from Canon PowerShot s230.

I am seriously considering exchanging it for a Canon PowerShot s400.

Could anybody help me in making this decision?

Thanks a bunch.

i dunno, but i also have an optio s, and must say that the pics aren't noiseless. you can also see, 200 asa speed is max, and then it's ruff noisy. so the sensor is really small, and those things produce more noise than a larger ccd. hm. could be possible that your canon has a more noiseless sensor.

it's also very important to use the right settings with the optio, on bad settings you get lousy pictures. esp. the autofocus needs assistance sometimes. that is also a little minus of the optio s: it got no extra AF sensor, everything will be managed internal by watching the contrast on the ccd. that results in a sometimes slow behaviour when focusing.

so it's the optio s, and it's ALL about size on this cam. i love and hate my cam, but it's the size that matters on this. and most pics look excellent after a bit of photoshop.

i would like to see a optio-s2: larger (noiseless) sensor, maybe 4-5mpix, lil larger more robust zoom (more speed), smoother zooming. bit better macro (or best ONE macromode that covers the whole spectrum). ability to take 640*480 (or best full pal/ntsc) 25fps/30fps movies with sound. size could be a bit bigger with no problems. and more than 2 seconds max time please. (2?). BUILT-IN: 512MB (or such) (this takes less space than a real card) plus slot for cards. ah, and a hold-trigger function.,please, pentax!!

price tag: maybe.. 399$

best,

andi

Can you link us to your photos? I may be able to help, or perhaps you have a bad camera.

Were your pictures resized?
What were they initially taken at?
Your pictures look much better than mine.
I will try to post some pics asap.
Thank you so much.

I'm not familiar with that you described the Cam since I've using the Cam for almost 3 months.
Almost everyone around me loves its performance.

Here is a sample pic.

On the exif, it says that the photo was taking at "basic (1)" JPEG Quality. It that corresponding to the three star ( ) setting on the Optio S?

Thanks again.

I see your concern on the photo. The top of the photo has a good focus but the bottom is clearly out of focus. You should be able to clearly read the car tag and signs. Looks like a DOF problem, spot metered on the flags or the lens system didn't properly line up. Next time set the mode to landscape and or change the metering to multi-segment. Hold the camera very still (this small camera takes a little practice & skill to hold). With the good lighting you had I would drop down to 50 ISO sensitivity.

About my photos, all are directly from the camera. Some have been sized for viewing on slower connections but one section has the full sized photos for viewing with a faster connection.

If you keep having this problem send the camera back.
