New Firmware 1.0.1 out

I also took some shots with the same lens and they don't look any softer than before. Lars
I took some test shots (with the 28-135IS) and despite beibng
focussed correctly they looked a bit on the soft side so I did the
reset (Clear settings) thing for both and it seems to have
sharpened back up again ..

It may seem like snake oil but something worth noting before all
the posts of "My 10D is soft after the formware update" come
flooding in..

I don't doubt that the phenomenon exists. But the question is "why?".

And WHEN do you have to do it? Every day? Every time the camera is turned on? Every month? Only when you upgrade firmware?

What is it about upgrading the firmware that made it necessary for you to (once again) do this reset?

And more importantly, if this is common (and how could it NOT be common? shouldn't it be virtually a requirement of all 10D's?), then why doesn't Canon MENTION this fact? It'd sure save them a lot of grief.
I'm sure that Pekka or someone actually proved it with before /
after shots when it was initially mentioned and it seems to have
worked again, if it hadn't my 10D would have been back to Canon as
the first shots were rather soft! . it's just fine again now :)

Yes, this is ON-TOPIC!

Wouldn't it make more sense for them to release the RIGHT upgrade in Japan, and send the WRONG one to Canon USA? ;)
I even didn't download it. I'm still going to wait for an official
US release. Who knows what those Jananese are thinking? I don't
trust them since Pearl Harbor.

I'd sure like to hear Canon's explanation of this phenomenon.

No, not me. For my first 10D reset had no effect at all and I have not done it on the new one yet because everything works. Now we have one question left: what does the reset do for GOOD cameras? :)

David,

A possible explanation is that the programmed resets and the defaults burned into the chip at the factory aren't the same on some cameras, maybe all of them. An indication of this is if removing the memory battery for awhile gets a different result than resetting everything. I don't know if this is the correct explanation but the "snake oil" resets work for my camera at least to a degree too. It seems to get softer and softer focusing sometimes until I am getting mostly garbage shots. Reset everything and put my preferred settings back in just like it was before the reset and I get a very noticeable higher percentage of acceptable pictures. This has happened enough times to make a believer of me. I strongly believe that we are resetting more than the defaults that we can see on the menus.

Dont worry, I'm a defective user too.....

The second time to Canon they determined my finger wasnt sitting on the shutter button right....so they attached a new finger ;^)
A two times defective and angry user.
I wish this 'good catch' could wait until tomorrow. Hate to see
'Canon broke my camera with firmware upgrade' threads. Why don't
you all wait one more day, even less than that? You will have a
list of issues fixed and detailed instructions on how to install
it. If you don't do it rigth, you may need to send it to Canon for
a fix. It will be at least a month, since all service senters are
already flooded by defective users.

If it happens gradually then only explanation is firmware bug which does e.g. rounding errors in internal settings which in time become visible in picture (for example there is a lens table in it, if it has self-adjust code which is buggy then there it is). Most likely this bug happens only when you have certain camera settings selected, or certain lens connected.

Well, my posts about this thread do look stupid, but let me explain my concern. I used to have a G1 and there was a doubtful firmware upgrade. I wanted to go back to the previous firmware version, but looks like there is no way to do that. Before I upgrade, I still want to see what was fixed and whether I need to install it. I don't see it in this package. And this "-e" at the end looks suspecios. I will not be surprised if I see something like "To all US users installed Japanese firmware upgrade..."

And what's wrong with waiting for the things to go their intended course? An official anouncement, an official release?

First impressions..

It appears to focus better than before with both the 24-70 and my 70-200IS and I am testing in low light conditions.

Maybe it's the placebo effect but in my case I think it's better than before whatever they did.

Can it be more official. This is from Canon Japan. It's not an American Company...........

To me it seems (almost definite) that the pics are less soft than before and it doesn't has much blown highlights anymore.

I just went outside, bright sun, and took pics of flowers in direct sunlight, even pure white hosta flowers. They definitely look sharper to me, and I'm sure the firmware corrected the blown highlights problem.
