CDI unfairly slams Phil

Chasseur D'Images posted a message blaming Phil for tattling on them for posting a pre-production Oly E-1 photo. I always liked the sight because you could always get good info before it was officially announced. Now, however, I plan to boycott CDI. If they want to be bleeding edgy by violating NDA's then that's the risk they take and they should not be going around blaming respected administrators like Phil(for their own actions) who wants to keep a good relationship with the manufacturers. Phil has repeatedly been stepped on by other sites that don't want to play by the rules. It is in very poor taste and I, for one, don't like it.

I agree Jay;

1500 CET: The embargo is over and we can finally bring you our detailed preview of Olympus's long awaited E-1 digital SLR. We had just under 48 hours with a pre-production camera, just long enough for me to produce a ten page preview of the camera and system. Unfortunately at this stage we are not allowed to publish image samples or talk about image quality.

Thanks Phil for bringing us the best reviews, when available, why do we need an image sample that does not represent the product...
Dave

They're both lobbing accusations about NDA's but I don't see anything worth boycotting. I'm sure Phil can handle a little bad mouthing.

Every action we take, small or large has a Payoff. I remember a counciller once saying: "You sat on the burner baby, now sit on the blisters"

and gets little respect from this site; so why wouldn't they get snappy for a change? We all enjoy the "leaks" they provide, don't we?

Stepping out of NDAs is dishonorable. Complaining when you get caught is childish. The journalists enjoy a working relationship with the photo companies. While some of the leakage is of interest to the consumer, we don't need the leaks as much as we need the right information and the reviewers need early product. Violating the NDAs may make the companies decide the risks outweigh the benefits and they'll shut-off the flow of info. CDI is risking all of that just to look good. They aren't doing us any favors.

I don't know. I love leaks personally and wish there were more. After all why do all those top-notch photo companies make it such a big secret thing. I kind of like that CDI is not playing by the rules (I know you've got to be French to appreciate;-) so far it hasn't hurt them much. We are the consumers who buy and we are the ones who want information even if it means breaking the rules a little... ;-)

I remember when the 400mm "DO" lens was about to be announced. If the information they posted ahead of time had been true, everyone would have a "DO" lens today because the price they reported was about 1/3 of what it turned out to be. I don't think they qualify as a reliable source of anything.

I'm an Apple user. We live and die on rumors, but, fortunately, Apple takes extreme measures to maintain a veil over new products. Case in point, both iMacs were almost complete surprises, up until hours before launch, and even the just announced G5 was mere speculation, up until an accidental web release a week ago.

The problem is the Osbourne effect. If it is known that you will be replacing a current product with something down the road, people hold off their purchases, and in Osbourne's case, the company went under. If prerelease images damage the launch of a product, it can cost sales and money. Hence the NDA. So far, CDI has been able to continue violating NDA's with impunity.

Perhaps the camera companies would do well to withhold the next round of pre-release cameras and specs from CDI so as to level the playing field for sites such as Phil's that maintain the NDA's. Perhaps that would be a lesson learned by CDI.

Rmember when you throw out the rule book & anything goes some people may get hurt.

Is it true Har* tte that your passion for leaks is due to your tolerance of your own bladder problems?

I wasn't going to comment on French cultural preferences. Putting personal convenience ahead of integrity isn't likely an accurate stereotype. But it wouldn't take much to convince me it's uncommon either.

If you don't agree with it, don't publish. But other publications have the right to follow their creed. Censorship prior to the publishing kills freedom of speech.

I really don't see where it starts being your problem. If Oly thinks that's wrong, well, they have a signed document, why don't they sue CDI?

So, according to your rationale, there should be no news embargo in place at all? The censorship is part of the NDA contract, it is not a threat to freedom of speech.

In the processor industry, the life cycle of a microarchitecture is five years, so nobody needs NDA. In the graphics industry, the cycle of any GPU core is a measly six months, and the same goes to digital cameras; hence, the emphasis on protecting intellectual property prior to publishing.

This is just great... CDI coming out to ruin the party. Call that a great magazine? LOL

I am not saying they shoud publish it, I am just saying that companies have to deal with the risk of some of their "top secret" (yeah, right) stuff being published once they handle it over to journalists. If they think the contract is being broken, go handle that in court, but never, EVER, ask for "reviewing the material before you publish" (like lame Philips, Sony, Pioneer and other consumer electronics ask me - I write for this magazine in Brazil. I just say "no, you will see it after it is published, it is my right as a journalist and as a citizen of a free society. If there is any liability (sp?), then sue me". And that's what 99% of my fellow writers do.).
