Think of switching to D810 from Canon 5d II

I am considering switching back to Nikon after 14 years. I always shot Nikon until the digital age, and Canon was light years ahead of Nikon back at the turn of the century. I shoot landscape mainly, and the full frame offered by Canon at the time was far better than what Nikon had on offer. Now with the rollout of the D810 @36mp I am considering dumping Canon and getting back on the Nikon bandwagon. I will probably keep my 6D, so as not to be all in....but I wanted opinions from folks that have shot both platforms; 5D and D810....... Question 1. Is the dynamic range difference strikingly better in the d810 v 5DII? 2. Has the focusing gotten better (my first nikon digital was god awful) 3. There seem to be so many zoom lens choices, what would be the two sharpest lenses you would carry?

Solution
I would wait for the possible mid September announcements for Photokina. I would then try to rent the camera I'm after to see if suits me. But at this time, in my opinion Canon 6d is excellent value for money (and its central AF point sensitive down to -3EV is awesome). If you keep your 6d, we cannot speak of a switch but of a complement. Get rid of 5d mk2. It's not worth using it. Buy a D810 (incredible AF, excellent ergonomics, reduced vibration due to the electronic first-curtain shutter and redesigned mirror mechanism, classy shutter sound, amazing DR and awesome 36 MP sharpness and clarity), 2-3 primes (Nikon 28mm f1.8G and Nikon 85mm f1,8G and maybe Nikon 50mm f1.8G if you think a normal lens is a must have for your shooting...
Hi, I am the OP.

Those are some very nice pictures, and no, I had no idea that you could use nikon or canon on a sony camera.

I would never own a Sony camera though, I am a Nikon/Canon guy as long as I have been shooting. (not including my medium format film cameras) and old habits die hard (i still have an f3)

I think that my canon lenses are all outdated, and have better replacements with the new II lenses, with the exception of my 16-35 which is sharp as a tack.

I did borrow an D810 in a shop yesterday and I am blown away at the results. I am pretty sure I will be dumping my 5dII and 3 lenses, keeping my 6D with the 24-105mm. Purchasing the D810 with a 18-35mm for starters, and 24-70. My next purchase would probably be the 14-24 (I tried it in the same shop and it is amazing) and the 70-200 2.8 .

I appreciate everyones feedback and enjoy reading the debates. Very entertaining whilst remaining informative.

Thanks to all who have posted here

Since you've decided switch is the route, may I suggest waiting a little bit on the info of D750? It has less megapixels than D810, but if it turns out that it can indeed shoot 8fps and take 4k video..
Thank you for your suggestions. I am afraid that I would rather have NO video on my camera, so this is not a consideration for me...and I don't shoot anything where i might need a fast FPS rate..

All the best,

Axel

I can see how you'd need 8fps and 4k video to capture landscapes :)

I don't see anything wrong with some added features but then again it is not a 36 mp apparently.

I would wait for the possible mid September announcements for Photokina. I would then try to rent the camera I'm after to see if suits me. Oh... just to add that even a zoom like Nikon 24-120mm f4 paired with the D810 will give you images far better than you would think. Any decent lens used in combination with the D810 will produce better photos than the photos taken with the same lenses but mounted on any other FF camera.
I did it...Bought an 810.

The dealer didn't have any lenses to sell me, but he gave me a 10 year old 35-135mm 3.5-4.5 for free. I played with that for a couple of days and was amazed at the quality of the images that this camera produced with a crappy old lens.....I know that I should have waited for the middle of the month, but I had reached the point with the 5d2 that I didn't even want to look at it. I also have my 6D in for repair due to soft images after 3 months of owning it....so I couldn't wait.

I went to another dealer and bought a better lens for it, the 18-35mm and am quite pleased. In fact the results are so stunning, I don't see any reason to keep any of my canon gear. I will be purchasing a 24-70mm 2.8, and the 70-200mm 2.8 with vrii. Will save up for the 14-24mm and that will be all i need aside from a zeiss prime down the road.

I will sell all of the canon gear to make the switch complete....I waited too long for Canon to get their s*#t together, and loyalty only take you so far.

Thanks for everyones input

Congrats! Just a suggestion but I have both 70-200 2.8 VR II and 70-200 4.0. If you don't need the 2.8 for the shallow DOF (portraiture), the f4.0 is actually sharper and at half the weight (but of course does not have the build quality of the 2.8).

Thanks for that info, I am on the fence betwixt the two. I photograph exclusively out of doors (unless someone asks me to shoot Interior architectural) but curious what you think keeping that in mind. Is the build quality on the 4.0 going to be less weather resistant? I always have purchased the fastest lens that i can afford.

Many thanks

Axel
Hi Axel,

I have been to Iceland a few times with both 70-200 f 4.0 and 2.8. In terms of weather resistance, I have had no problems with either lens in pouring rain for hours at a time. In fact, only my 24-70 2.8 showed a little bit of condensation in these conditions (but only once). The build quality on the 70-200 2.8 is definitely more pro with extensive use of alloys as apposed to polycarbonate in the f 4.o version.

Thanks for the feedback. I still am not sure which way to go...perhaps "borrow lenses" would be the way to go before buying.
