Getting a US Canon 10d fixed in Europe

Hi,

Has any European who has purchased a 10d in USA tried getting it fixed in Europe?

I see French Canon says you need to take it back to your dealer, but what if the dealer is in the US?

Have you tried claiming an International Warranty directly at Canon?

My European 10d has a european warranty only

All that seems a bit stupid from them (sigma provide international warranty!) and you need to send back your 10d to the us to have it fixed.

It's not stupid at all from Canon's point of view.

Canon (as all camera makers) has decided to sell at far higher prices in Europe and would do anything do discourage any attempts from an european customer to buy outside Europe, eg USA where it's cheaper.

That's the reason why there is no international warranty.
 
So - nobody has actually tried this?

Maybe calling Canon US and asking them to convince their European counterparts to accept yr Camera would work...?

As I tried to point out earlier, the term "Europe" in your original question must be specified since all European subsidaries may have different policies. Also the policies for camera bodies may or may not differ from the policies regarding lenses. You just cannot generalize this issue.

...but they DONT HAVE to fix your camera anywhere in europe, because you have only a US warranty on your camera. I think they will not repair it. With lenses it is diffrent they come with international warranty.

I haven't had to try this yet, but I've done some research on this topic before buying my 10D in the US too. Basically you have two options:

1. Send it back to the US for in-warranty repair; you'll have to pay for the shipping charges yourself. Check with the US store to see how they prefer to handle this.

2. Send it to the Canon France service center to get it repaired; if you're very lucky, they won't charge you (because they decide to honor the US warranty anyway), but most likely you will just have to pay for the repair.

So it's either shipping costs or repair costs.

Emailed Canon US who stated that the camera would not be repaired abroad as it is only a US warranty so dont expect too much.
