Today, I was in a scenic place and decided to take (with a Fujifilm XF1) a set of pictures of a single scene with different settings of DR and film simulation. Unfortunately, I did not have a notebook with me to record the settings for each shot (although I am fairly sure that I can recall the settings for each shot, memory is fickle). Is there a program that will read from the image file the DR setting and the film simulation setting?

Have you tried the Fuji program bundled with your camera?

Those bundled with my X10 and my X-S1 show EXR infos (as far as i am concerned, it is their only appealing feature).

Thank you, Dave, for reminding me that I already had an earlier (2011) version of Exiftool on my system; this morning, I downloaded and installed the latest version (9.70), and remembered why I had forgotten about it: the bewildering command syntax.

Specifically, I never learned how to use the command syntax to navigate to the directory where the image files reside. (This is on a Mac.) How do you do that? Could you give me a sample command line?

Thank you.

You could use Exiftool with ExiftoolGUI - screenshot of this here:

The download link on this web page is no longer active but it appears to be available here:

Thank you Derek; I appreciate your taking the time to reply. Unfortunately for me, it appears that that GUI is available for Windows OS only, and I have no Microsoft software on my computers. Tant pis.

I didn't find one, so I kept the images inside the camera (via the SD card) and used the displayed info. Even that is not complete (I don't remember what is missing) but the Fujifilm-supplied programme on the accompanying CD does the rest.

Thanks for the lead, Dave. Unfortunately, the link the author provides to his website is a DynDNS link that seems to be broken. I'll keep trying to find another path.

EDIT: I had been trying the author's first link in the forum that Dave linked above; a later link, further down the forum page: http://hvdwolf.github.io/pyExifToolGUI/ works, and I was able to download pyExifToolGUI-0.5.dmg and install the app on Mac OSX. But the EXIF data that the app reveals still lacks the DR setting data and the film simulation data.

The last time (now ancient history) that I ran into obstacles like this seeking a utility, I ended up writing the code myself; I think that I do not retain that capacity these days.

What is missing from the camera's own display (at least on the XF1) is the information that I seek: the DR setting and the film simulation setting. I can get very detailed "standard" EXIF information viewing the images in Aperture. But Aperture gives no data about DR or film simulation settings.

MyFinePix Studio (the Fujifilm program on the CD in the box the camera shipped in) is for Windows only.

In case anybody wants to attempt to extract the DR and film simulation data from the file of one of the images, I provide below a copy of the SOOC original of one of the images in the set.

DCSF2354, part of a 21-image set
DCSF2354, part of a 21-image set

I should especially be interested to know if Fujifilm's MyFinepix Studio app for Windows shows the data.

You could try Jeffrey's Exif viewer - http://regex.info/exif.cgi

I've read somewhere it works with Mac OS and Safari.

I tried it briefly and it told me my X-S1 pics were shot with Provia simulation

Only downside (I found) that, as it's a web based app, it seemed a bit slow.

Regards

Derek

... The Fuji data should be under the right hand top tab which says 'Maker'

It may be SOOC when it left your computer but by the time DPR's software finished mangling it, it had about 90% (estimate) of its EXIF data stripped out and 100% of its Maker Notes data removed.

The only way we can see ALL of the EXIF data in you photos is to upload them to your gallery. From there we can download what you uploaded by using the "Original" link in your gallery. I did this for one of the photos already in your gallery ("DSCF1340 - straight out of the camera"), a photo of red foliage shot with an XF1 and ExifTool's Maker Notes data shows that the dynamic range used was manually set to 400%, that optical stabilization (mode 2) was used, Film mode was F0/Sandard (Provia), Sharpness and Saturation were Normal, Shadow Tone and Highlight Tone were Medium-Soft, White Balance was Auto and HighISONoiseReduction was Weak.

Prime, did you edit this image? Many low-quality image editors such as Photoshop remove important tags.

Your original image is missing Dynamic Range tags. Maybe the new cameras dont't write them? Even my F750 did.

Another good way to look at EXIF is with the Firefox add-on, EXIF Viewer 2.0.

You are right: that is where it is; I had been looking in the wrong place, under "EXIF." Thank you, Dave.

Line 27: Film Mode: F2/Fujichrome (Velvia)

Line 28: Dynamic Range Setting: Manual

I assume that, when I get to images that I shot at DR400, Line 26 will say something other than "Standard." That is what I investigate next.

I have learned all sorts of Good Stuff this morning; I always had assumed that DPReview treated photos embedded inside posts in the same manner as it treats photos uploaded to a Gallery. Anyway, FWIW, I have uploaded the SOOC image -- which I now can confirm that I shot at DR100 and Velvia film simulation -- to my gallery.

Not I, but it got edited in the upload processing at DPReview, evidently.

(Putting on track shoes to get a head start on grinning, ducking, and running)

Because I am an adult, I . M U C H . prefer Seamonkey to Firefox: when I was a child I spoke like a child, thought like a child, reasoned like a child; but when I grew up I finished with childish things. :-D It remains to be seen whether EXIF Viewer 2.0 works with Seamonkey: most Firefox add-ons do work with Seamonkey, but some do not. Thank you for the pointer.

Aha, I thought you had posted the Original instead of the large, or perhaps you did and large was the same size as Original.

Anyway, is the line "Film Mode : F2/Fujichrome" what indicates Velvia?
