While I never own it, I heard from one of my ex co-workers that 20mm f2.8 he had was very nice lens (and quite cheap too).

Apparently, according to latest NR rumor, 20mm f/1.8 G version might appear now too. That might be interesting lens if price attractive (eg. I might not consider 18-35, but rather this prime instead). What price would you expect on such lens?

I would expect it to cost more than the 18-35G actually. Given Nikon's recent pricing trends, I wouldn't be surprised to see a tag of $900-1100 US.

While I really hope this rumor is true (for FX), my guess is that it will be about $200-300 over what everyone thinks it should be. Its a tough call, if they go too much, DX users will just get the prime sharp Sigma 18-35 1.8 instead. Given that the Nano-coated 28 1.8 is $700, I'd say they could ask $900 for this one. which means it will probably be at least $1200.

I agree. I bet that ends up being a very expensive lens.

Look at the price on the recent 35mm f/1.8g FX. A 20mm lens is significantly more expensive to design and manufacture than a 20mm lens..and the 35mm didn't even have Nano coatings, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm excited by this announcement, but I still wish Nikon would modernize a smaller set of wide-angle primes. I would almost rather have an excellent but affordable 20mm f/2.8g than an expensive 20mm f/1.8g.

I think that should be close... if one compares oldish 28mm and its f/1.8G version and uses this to guess price of new lens by checking existing older 20mm lens - that's close.

Indeed. f/1.8 at 20mm seems like a fairly niche requirement.

Totally agree - I would prefer maybe a even slower lens of it were smaller and better performing optically. A lens that's not much different in size and performance to the wide zooms would not be too exciting.

Key example of what I'm looking for would be the F3.4 21mm SEM for M-Mount. A new lens doesn't have to have that level of performance, but something with that kind of compromise would be more interesting than a F1.8 lens

It will probably be a very good lens, but I hope the price will be kept way below the U$ 1K... Let's see...

I've been looking at a wide FX lens. I'm not a zoom person and been thinking about the zeiss 18. If this 20 is rumored to be released soon, I may wait a bit and see if they make this and how it performs.

This lens sounds very interesting to me. I hope it can deliver already wide open. I would be primarily interested to have it for starscapes.

Sign me up if it happens :^)

I'd love for this to be true. it doesn't even have to beat the 14-24. It would be awesome to have something more compact with filter threads.

If it takes the form of previous F/1.8 primes then that seems a little too high for me although I would expect it to be the most expensive thus far released. There is the possibility though that this lens will be a pro release like the 24, 35 and 85 F/1.4 primes, certainly F/1.8 at 20mm is a more advanced spec than any of the other F/1.8 primes thus far and you could argue its a more specialised lens as well. If Nikon could provide performance like the Zeiss 21mm but faster then they could charge a big premium for it as well.

A 20mm f/1.8 for FX sounds like a very ambitious lens, if it is to have decent performance. The Zeiss 21 is f/2.8 and that has 16 elements (including 5 of special types of glass).

It sounds to me like either the rumored specifications are wrong and it has a slower aperture, or it is going to be a much more complex and expensive lens than what people seem to be hoping for here.

Ssshhh!! Please don't encourage them... ;-)

Rumors say it's a 20/1.8 with nano coating. Considering the 24/1.4 price and its older brother 28/1.4 price... I'd say not less than a thousand (at least)
Probably even more. Fast superwides are complex to make...

Any new products due soon will be announced by the opening of Photokina on 16th Feb.

There is less than 2 weeks to "fact" or still a rumour.

What I expect Nikon to want to charge and what I think I would like to pay are two different things. It also depends on the quality of such a lens.

If it is of top quality, ie 24mm f1.4G type quality, then I expect a price tag in the order of US$2,000. I mean, if we want it to be as good as the Nikon 24 f1.4G or the Zeiss 21 f2.8, than you have to expect a price tag to match and this is an f1.8 lens compared to the Zeiss's f2.8.

This spec has been done before, with the FF Sigma 20mm f1.8. These Sigma wides can be chunky beasts, and I guess the performance is probably a bit quirky, judging from comments from users. It looks like it was designed for film era cameras, so a new Nikon would almost certainly have to achieve higher specs to be worth producing, but I imagine the price would reflect that.
