Hi - I am still learning about lenses to capture the right photography. I was recently recommended by you to purchase the Canon 50mm/f1.8. This lense took amazing close up pictures while I was on vacation. I really liked it because of the sharpness and the ability to take pictures at night in low light environment.

I am now seeking recommendation for a lense that produce the same results except with offers more in focus. I need a wide angle lense, but I know prime lenses provide more of a sharp picture.

I have a T3i.

Thanks in advance.

The 10-18 sounds nice, I have the 10-22 and love it. For a still very wide if not ultra wide the Samyang/Rokinon 14mm seems like a great lens if you don't mind manual focus.

Thank you! I will research it. I appreicate the input.

What do you mean by "more in focus"?

Consider the 28/1.8 or 35/2 or the Sigma 18-35 / 1.8.

While some prefer prime lenses, zoom lenses can be very sharp and most pros and serious amateurs use them as well as primes.

If you have the 18-55 kit zoom lens you already have a wide-angle lens. 18mm is wide-angle. I think what you want is an ultrawide lens. The Canon 10-18 is supposed to be a good lens (I'm a Nikon user) at a good price. Others worth considering include the Sigma 8-16 and 10-20 and the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8. I have the Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 and I like it a lot, but I shoot a lot of interiors so today I would get the faster Tokina 11-16 f/2.8.

If you don't have the 18-55 IS, I recommend getting it or the Canon 18-135 IS before getting an ultrawide.

If you are ever considering getting a full frame camera in the future, I would suggest Canon's new 16-35 f/4L IS.

Hi - thank you for your time. I do have the 18-55 IS, but it is not as sharp as the 50MM F1.8. I am seeking a wide angle lense that provides the same sharpness as the 50MM F1.8...

Is sharpness the only drawback of the lens for you?

If you don't need any wider, and insist on a prime lens, the Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM may be your best bet. If that's even too wide, you can get the Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM, which is even sharper, though that's going more towards a standard focal length for APS-C.

However, you can get an even sharper lens, believe it or not, by choosing a zoom lens. As both primes I've mentioned are very wide lenses for 35mm frame, on which they still have to work well. It's harder to manufacture a 20mm lens that's compatible with a 35mm frame-format sensor, than a 20mm lens specifically for APS-C.

The Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM is one sharp lens, sharper than both Canon primes I've mentioned. It's also wider than both primes, both in focal length and in maximum aperture.

If you want wider than 18mm and autofocus, you'll have to choose a zoom lens, or pay top-dollar for Canon's 14mm f/2.8L, either the original or the II revision. Other offerings, like the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 IF ED MC and the Samyang 16mm f/2.0 ED AS UMC CS, are manual focus-only.

The Canon 10-18mm wide angle zoom is probably a very good lens, but I prefer my zooms to have at least a 3x zoom range, or I'll be inclined to get a prime at the wide end of the range ... then "zoom with my feet", if possible.

The Samyang 14mm is great on a full-frame, but less so on a 1.6 crop factor Rebel.

Good luck finding a prime lens for Canon DSLRs with a focal length shorter than 14mm, that outperforms the Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM.
