Seriously thinking about a V2 or V3..how are they for landscapes?

Thx as always, Sonyshine!!!

Another one I made in NYC, 10 min after buying 70-300 in Adorama, with V1.

With good skills and a tripod, the Nikon V1 is great for landscapes. I came from a D700 and after it died, my V1 was all I had besides my iPhone and my medium format film cameras. It is liberating to shoot with a camera so small and light. Panoramic stitches are so easy for me to set up for and create now. I shoot in RAW... capture is only the beginning of a photo coming to life for me but my V1 provides me with great images to start with out of the camera. With my V1, I am able to obtain a high level of detail, even with only 10 MP. Contrary to popular belief, you can produce landscapes with 10 MP. That being said, my V1 has nowhere near the IQ as my D700, but if you know what you're doing, you can overcome any limitations. I'll never go back to an oversized D-SLR again.

Beautiful pictures...i just got my V2 in the mail today. What lenses did you use for the landscapes? I am waiting for a 10-100 and i only have the 18.5 at the moment.

Lovely photos. You get more with your V1 than most photographers would with your D700.

Great series, Bravo.!!!

I have followed this forum without owning a Nikon 1 V (any number) and seriously thinking about buying one. I have noticed the enthusiastic comments of some members who really know how to use the cameras and others having mixed feelings in comparison with other camera platforms. I own and love a D610 and use it primarily for landscape and museum photography, a few pictures of friends and grandkids. I am not a professional, but I enjoy capturing moments and scenes.

I have noticed that most of the "enthusiastic" comments for these cameras are related to photos of real life (birds, insects, flowers, etc.) which I also love to take photos. But I have not seen that many pictures of wide landscapes, sunsets, city vistas, etc.

I am curious what do the V series users feel about landscape photography with this camera platform. I am also interested in getting your views about the practicality of using Nikon FX lenses (I have 18-35, 24-85 and 28-300) with the Nikon adaptor.

Many thanks for any input to my dilemma.
Hi HGFGKM.... I too use Nikon FX (D700), DX (D7100) and CX (V1/V2) cameras and have found that each format has its strengths. You've specifically asked about landscapes captured with the Nikon 1 series cameras. Due to the small size of the CX system, I find I often have it with me, whereas I must make a conscious effort to take my D700 kit out. The Nikon V2 and three or four lenses fit nicely in a waist pack, so I never go on a walk without them. Here is a sample of many landscapes / seascapes etc. captured with the V1/V2 kit. I especially recommend the very sharp 6.7-13mm CX wide angle for landscapes. It's very sharp to the borders IMHO. As for using Nikkor lenses with the FT-1 adapter, I find I use the AF-S 300mm f4 (with and without TC-14E II) to get the reach required for birding.

I have many examples of landscapes etc. captured with the Nikon 1 system here: (as well as other albums of images taken with full frame lenses).

Thank you for sharing these beautiful pictures...I got my V2 a few days ago and I took it yesterday for some landscape photos in Pittsburgh with the 6.7-13 lens. I noticed that when I used the "auto" mode, most of the pictures were over-exposed. Things were better in the P mode and Aperture mode, especially when I used a -1.0 exposure compensation. I also noticed that EC adjustment had no effect on shutter priority mode. From the exif values in your excellent pictures, you do not seem to have such problems. I am waiting for the 10-100 lens to arrive, to try that one and see where the problem lies. I bought my camera through Amazon as a slightly used item and I am concerned about any hidden issues. I applied the latest firmware update. I have not tried the 10-30 and 30-100 lenses. Do you have any thoughts about exposure issues with the auto mode? Worth using or skip all together? Thanks for any insights!

Hi again HGFGKM... Thanks for the kind words! I shoot almost exclusively in M mode so haven't really experienced the issues you're describing. Having said that, I usually set my exposure compensation to -0.7 or so as I prefer slight underexposure to overexposure. This seems to be consistent with all 5 of my CX lenses.

Try changing focus area to center point or spot for effective EC control. This from the Nikon user guide and personal experience.
