Great Lens

After renting an excellent copy of the Nikon Nikkor-AF 80-200 F/2.8 and falling love it it I decided to purchase it thinking I would sell my Sigma 50-150mm F2.8. I wanted sell the Sigma after having had a chance to compare the two as the Nikon is 50mm longer, takes great photos, weighs less, built like a tank, and slightly faster.

However, after going to a indoor car show this weekend with the Nikon I noticed that I had to step back quite a bit to compose shots. The images I took were good, but after a while I got frustrated and eventually wondered how much better the Sigma would have been considering its focal range of 50-150mm for an event like that. Because of this weekends experience, I've decided to hang on to the Sigma a while longer. I'm thinking for the next indoor event like a car show my 17-55 F/2.8 and the Sigma 50-150mm might served me better.

By the way, since this was to be a review of the Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 EX DC APO OS HSM, I'll close by saying I love the lens. It takes very good photos, and is constructed nicely. It's a little heavy and yes when I use it there are times when I've wanted a little more reach, but overall, I can't complain about the lens. I'll just have to put a little more thought into my needs before I take it out again.

Thank you !!

Hi,

How can you say the Nikon 80-200 is just 50 mm more than the Sigma 50-150.

80-200 = 120-300 mm equivalent for Nikon DX cameras

50-150 = 75-225 mm equivalent.

They have lot of difference in terms of range both in the short and long end.

I stand corrected.

Well it is 50mm more, completely independent on what size of sensor you're using it on.

However, I believe it would be more usefulto say it has a third more reach (200-150)/150=(300-225)/225=1/3 which is independent on sensor size.

I agree....

This is my next purchase. I've owned dozens of lenses and while the f4 version of Nikon's 70-200 is just a wonderful piece of glass, I really appreciate the extra stop of light. I do think I can see myself with an entire Sigma kit (10-20, 30 1.4, 18-35, 17-50 and the 50-150).

That would be a nice kit.
