My new Canon 70D is not able to take pictures while keeping it vertically i.e. above 60 degree angle from Horizontal.
Is it a problem or all DSLR behaves like that only?
for eg.
Let's say I am lying on my bed and I want to take a snap of my roof then I will hold in 90 degree position but then it
will fail to capture the focus and does not take the shot.

Does any body is having the same problem?

Can you manually focus on the ceiling? I'm wondering if there's trouble focusing on a plain ceiling with no details.

The camera uses phase detect to focus. That requires some edges with sufficient contrast to detect and aliign. That's how it focuses. So it will not lock focus on a plain wall or plain ceiling. Nor is it supposed to. It needs some object edges with contrast to focus.

Not likely problem with the 70D, but there have been some lenses that have faulty AF where this happens, specifically the EF 70-200 f/4L IS USM. If so, have it serviced (warranty or otherwise).

No issues with shooting position here.

What are you focusing on? Can you post a sample?

Are you using the viewfinder or shooting in live view?

What AF mode are you using?

Which AF point are you using?

What exposure mode are you shooting in?

There's a ton of info that would help sort out your issue.

TIA,

Any camera can take a photo at any angle; I've never used a DSLR or compact that could not.
for eg.

Sounds to me like you're trying to take a photo of a ceiling with little or no contrast. Any camera will have trouble with this.

Photos of low or no contrast at all, yes. Taking photos at any angle when there is something with sufficient contrast for the camera to focus on, no. Have you tried using manual focus?

Well said above, it is because it is not able to focus on the wall. I changed it to manual mode and then everything went smooth.

Thanks all for providing such prompt response as it is my first DSLR and from my college days I wanted to do photography now I have one so don't want to get into any manufacturing trouble.
