I’m relatively new to photography (2 years) but have found myself taking a liking to it or perhaps obsessing is a better word. I started with an older Canon film slr and eventually moved to a Sony S70 and then a Sony F707. I find myself bringing my camera with me almost every where I go, taking a mix of both casual snapshots and photos. One thing I’ve grown to appreciate about the 707 (and other p&s cameras) is the live preview on the LCD and the size of the camera which allows me to easily carry it around and snap a few shots whenever I please (the LCD display adds a substantial amount to the “casual” factor ). Through all of this experience with the 707 I’ve also learned:
  • action photography is futile (as well as attempting to capture those “special moments”)
  • low light situations yield unusable photos (in my opinion)
  • most photos cannot be taken the way I want due to the lack of a proper lens
That being said a DSLR is perfect for me when it comes to capability but I wonder if the 10D be a practical camera for always having around my neck at the beach etc. In other words can the 10D be used as a complete replacement for a P&S or do I still need to use the 707 as a walk around camera? I realize that the camera is substantially larger and heavier, I’m just unsure of what it feels to walk around for a day “wearing” it. I’m just hoping to hear from other people that may have been in a similar situation – this is the only thing I remain unsure about…

Thanks in advance!

Sure -- there are lots of situations where a 10D and a big lens are too much -- hiking and climbing are two places I don't take the 10D very often.

I carry a G3 when I'm pretty serious about pictures, but don't want the big gun -- and I carry an S400 when I'm not really looking for pictures, but want a camera just in case something comes up.

That being said, a 10D with say, a 24-85mm lens is not that big a deal to carry all day long -- I often take it the beach, street fairs, etc.

You'll be shocked at how well the 10D handles action and low light. Truly an amazing camera!

Paul

hi,

you'll get used to it after a while. i tend to "wear" mine just over the shoulder and let it hang to the side, or across my body. the wrist strap is much more easier to deal with as well. it makes the cam stick to your hand and feels much more natural. but hanging around the neck in front will bring you down after a while. or you could use a shooters bag which just has a flap over the bag instead of zippers so you can get to the cam quickly.

I owned a Minolta D7 before I bought my D60, and I still like it because it's a great 'carry everywhere' camera. The quality is (as well as your 707s quality) so good that I (so far) never had any regret to leave the D60 in the house when changing lenses or a bulk/heavy camera wasn't appropriate.
If you can afford the 10D without selling the Sony I would keep it.

Some digital cameras, some lenses, 2 eyes

10D has completely replaced my previous camera Canon PowerShot S10. When I got 10D, I've never looked back. When I want it to be as small as possible, I attach 50/1.4. It is not long enough and certainly it is not as wide as it should be, but usually you can step back. And it's not too big either. It won't fit into your pocket, but you don't get all in one camera.

I "weared" 10D+50/1.4 combo the whole day two weeks ago, but it wasn't too big for me. I got better shots in all the different situations that I could ever take with smaller camera. All the low light and DOF stuff I did is not possible with typical P&S.

If I don't need lens for low light, I would use my 17-40/4L, if I feel that it's not too big for the purpose. It's twice as big as 50/1.4, but it has zoom and it's quite wide on 10D. Both lenses are very good.

For p&S take a look at the S400 and for DSLR, the 10D. This should cover all of your situations.

Hi Ky,

I'd agree with some of the other posters here.

I had a G2 for a while, gor rid of it when I made the (professional) move from film to digital, and regretted the sale until I bought an S50 recently. I was missing too many shots by just having the D60.

As a side-note; I also sold quite a number of shots I had taken using the G2 at a recent exhibition - so these cameras are well worth always having around.
