What are these blotches on my RX100 photos?

Photos were taken with HDR. What the hell is this stuff?

Also the grass in the foreground is still very dark. I'm surprised that the HDR on this camera doesn't do much for it. I know the photos were taken right into the sun, but my old Casio ZR100 would have handled this better. I just got the RX100 so I'm just starting to learn how to use it.

Sensor dust, if it was it always would appear on the same place, it might be some kind of debris/dust in the lens assembly.

but yes return it for repair.

I agree; it looks more like crap on the lens. Also, if you're using the built in HDR, it's just not very good - you'd be better served by using the built in bracketing in A mode and using Nik/googles HDR Efex pro 2 or something like that to process the images. And learn how to fix the occasional spots with the tools in aperture or Lightroom or whatever you're using.

do you get these in all shots, all shooting modes?

test for sensor dust:

set camera in normal shooting mode

A mode, small aperture (largest f#) , shoot zoomed and shoot wide; a few shots of a white or light colored background: painted wall, featureless sky.

Transfer to computer screen for larger image to look for them. If you look to find them on the camera, be sure to look wide, they can be near the edge and go out of sight when zoomed.

Normally, they would be in the same place for every shot. However, my rx100, 1st spots incident, I had two spots in the evening, took two aspirins, woke up with 4 spots. That is why I suspect is was specks of internal lubricant or something that came within the lens assembly that moved from unseen to seen.

My replacement lens/sensor also got a spot.

It isnt dust. All the spots have the same size and shape, a slanted rectanangle.

I would guess that it is some sort of reflection.

I agree, this isn't dust. Reflection? I doubt that also. To me, it looks like something wrong with the sensor. Either way, print a couple of these photos out and then send them along with the camera back Sony. There is something wrong that you can't fix yourself. This is a strange one.

I seriously doubt it is sensor dust as the camera is new and I have used it very little so far, and it has always been stored in the Sony semi-hard case.

These artifacts, or whatever they are, are present only in HDR mode. The same scene shot without HDR did not have this (and there was actually no difference from HDR in any other respect).

More attempts at HDR in Manual mode, with the same results. Note how it's always the bottom left and upper right corners that are ruined with the pixels and rectangles. WTF.

The Ebola virus is beginning to spread and mutate in your camera. ;)

Have you contacted Sony Service about your condition?

I.m thinking you have a damaged sensor and it is slight enough you don't notice it on a normal photo but when stacking them for hdr it shows up???? Same way noise will show up more in an HDR.

You are shooting by a lake at sunset. There is a wind blowing off the lake and blowing water at your camera. Your eyes can't see it but your camera can.

To check out my idea use your flash next time you are in the same situation. You will see a myriad globules of water.

I live in a very hot and humid place. I see these kind of shapes in my shots all the time.

I know what you're talking about, because I've seen those in previous cameras, but this is not it. These are obviously camera-produced artifacts in always the same 2 corners. I was shooting an ocean and was pretty far away from the water.

and more moist than the water coming off a lake. The artifacts are in two corners because you are shooting into the light. If you use a flash, the artifacts will be all over the image.

Do these artifacts appear when you are not shooting beside the ocean?

I think I've narrowed down the problem. It has nothing to do with moisture. I get these artifacts when shooting into bright sunlight. When shooting in normal conditions, the photos are fine.

My old Casio ZR1000 never had this problem in HDR. Am I doing something wrong here?

Here's an example. Those same rectangular blotches and granular noise all over the photo:
