I shot the Biennal Hawgsmoke event a few weeks back. It is a competition that takes place between the different A-10 Warthog Squadrons around the country. All taken with the D4 and 200-400 version 1

Glenn, great shots as always.

I remember a Red Flag debrief a long time ago when a Marine SAM battery commander when discussing defensive manoeuvring, suggested to the gathering that the key is, "speed is life!"

And from the back of the room came the reply "unless you're a hog driver!"

Very jealous. One of my favourite military aircraft but being in the UK not one that is seen very often.

Great captures too (though would have undoubtedly looked better if shot with a Canon 😉)

Wow, excellent shot's love them all…..

I'm looking at your photos again. Still amazing. You're shooting @ 200 mm. Are these photos cropped? The second one, in particular, looks like he is waving at you. ..... I saw a Youtube video on this plane. According to the video, the plane is built around the cannon that protrudes from the nose. It turns out the gun, when fully assembled, is nearly the length of the plane. Very interesting. Of there were other interesting things about the plane - it's effectiveness, yada, yada ...... Anyway, great pics.

The A10 was indeed built around the GAU-8. You will also notice it is slightly off centre to account for the shear torque the thing generates when firing.

The US Navy's ship defence system-Phalanx-is based on a modified version of this gun.

Apologies, somewhat off topic but I do love my A10's!

Its shape is also designed so that it is difficult from the ground which is the front and which is the back and thus (and given that humans make assumptions about direction of travel etc when the front is obvious) makes it more difficult to track visually.

If you have seen one at an airshow you will see that this works to an extent.

The engines are designed to give minimal heat signature (high up and blow over the tailplane and can fly with half its control surfaces shot off.

Truly an awesome aircract...

Thanks for takinghte time to comment, I really appreciate it.

The shots were slightly cropped with the second one being cropped a fair amount more, That being said, there were a few situations where 200mm on a full frame was way too much. Now That's close!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
