Alas, I cannot open the RAW file (IE9), using IE, Adobe, etc. It is 001.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Windows has been a bit tardy about releasing codecs for newer cameras (so you can't see the FZ70 thumbnails in Explorer).

I think you'll be happier working with Faststone Viewer (which is a very powerful free program) instead of Explorer. Here's an example of the Faststone interface

Faststone _should_ work immediately.

If you want to use Explorer to view FZ70 raw image thumbnails, you'll need to install an external codec pack such as this one. A $9.99 license will let you install the codecs on up to three computers.

IE cannot directly open any RAW files. I don't know of any web browser that can. When you see RAW file images in a web browser, they are not actual RAW files but a RAW file that has been converted to a browser friendly file like JPEG without any modifications. All RAW files are proprietary to specific camera types and models. Each time a new model comes out, software and or systems must be updated to support it. (except .DNG RAW files)

Try Adobe RAW converter. Here is the latest version, 8.5

Now the raw file must be one that is supported. Here is a current list of supported RAW files and cameras. http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/camera-raw.html Lists like this are updated frequently, but it still takes some time for a new camera's RAW file to be supported.

Also note that each different Manufacturer RAW type may have a different suffix and when asking questions it is helpful to know the file suffix File suffixes like: .NEF .ORF .ARW .RW2 and so on.

And yes, what sherman said also. FYI, latest version of adobe converter does support FZ70 if that is the camera used.

David,

I think she means windows explorer, not internet explorer. Windows explorer shows .RW2 thumbnails just fine - as long as there are appropriate (camera-specific) codecs installed.

Sherm, I've used FastStone for some time now, didn't even think of using it to open the RAW file! (Red face!). Yes it worked perfectly!

Thanks everyone for all you help!

"It's muddy looking because it's not sharpened, and doesn't have NR applied. Your typical raw processor will handle that easily."

Sherm, I don't really know how to do this (FastStone?); as I've never shot in RAW before.

I'm going to post something (hopefully later today) as a separate thread. In the meantime, here are some pictures of home :-)

Sherm, thanks for such a beautiful travel log thru my state! The one with the black bear seems to be too close for comfort, knowing how fast they can move! Also they are very unpredictable.

Thanks. I agree about the black bear - I wasn't happy about the person getting so close, particularly because he had our car keys.

The high point of the trip was a young (? 2yo) grizzly which ran down the road next to one car, and then next to ours - perhaps 30 mph with no trouble at all. Paced the cars for a while, and then seemed to get bored and ran into the woods.

Nice photo of the young grizzly! That seems strange that he'd run alongside the cars; perhaps wanting a handout, or simply bored.

"particularly because he had our car keys." Yes, that would be a problem, if the bear ended up with your car keys!. I don't think people realize how fast a bear can move, one could not outrun them. I had a black bear rip off a wall of my back porch in the middle of the night. Several asked me, did I go outside to get pictures of it? Are they kidding!! I have a very healthy respect for them, & don't tempt fate.
