I'm boxing and selling my D800. Party is over, but fun continues.

Two years and three months ago, I sold my D300s and ordered a D800E. Thanks to London Olympics, I waited three months and got nothing. Finally, I secured a D800 from a Canadian dealer. I had great deals of fun for the past 24 months, at a cost of $75/month, not a bad deal.

Today, I'm doing it again, with D800 for D810. I'm expecting more fun for the coming two years. The net, $50/month, quite affordable.

Of all the 42,432 junk images, I think this one is the least eye-hurting.

I've a similar shutter count on mine, and I'm also looking forward to the upgrade!

Enjoy your new camera!

Would be interested to hear why you are switching though. There doesn't seem to be anything in the D810 that is a game changer. +1 fps isn't significant. The buffer increase does sound good but not worth £1k just to upgrade just for that. AF improvements? We'll see...

I'm not going to sell my D800 for a D810. One thing would change my mind: if the sensor is significantly improved (say, about 1 stop improvement) at high ISO. I think this is unlikely though.

That is really awesome, and I have to agree that this image has got to be one of the best!!!

I am just over 2 years with my D800 as well, and I am only up to about 19,000 clicks, so I still have plenty of life in mine. As inciting as the D810 is, I am waiting one more generation.

Best of luck with your new camera, may it give you as many joys as you old beauty!

I tried selling my D800 for $1900 with third party grip but I got no offers. Mine has 24000 shutter. At $75 a month, that's means you're hoping to get $1800. With high shutter it may be tough. I ended selling my D7100 because I did not want to give away my D800. For me D810 is a must have. I don't care about all the crazy talk about D810 not being a game changer. I need game ON not game changer. So I will be shooting with D800 and D810.

D800 has very low second hand value. D700 has better value than D800. D3s is the king in value. Good lucky selling.

Why crazy? Pretty much every serious commentator acknoweldges this to be an incremental, mid-cycle, update.

Why not buy two D810s if the D800 is insufficient?

Just wondering. Respectfully, when I read your post it sounds like you want to sink $$$ into a new camera just "because".

I think we are at a point of small improvements with camera development. I have a d810 pre ordered and may keep my d800e as a backup camera if the value of the d800e is not very good. I see that there are several improvements, especially the auto focus that make it worth while for an upgrade. I sold my d4 and got a used d800e and banked the money that I made off the d4 sale to be used for the d810.

Who are this serious commentators? I am the only commentator that counts.

Meaning the game is already on. Nobody is looking to change the game.

Nobody said D800 is insufficient.

This explains a lot. I think I'll steer clear. Seeya!

Upgrade or not? There are tons of talks about why or why-not, on D800, D700, D300, ... It gives me headache.

To me, it's always simple. After examining all the facts, I ask myself two questions:

1. Can I afford it?

2. Based on my previous similar purchasing experience, will I be happier this time?

Wow! Terrific shot! Transfers a flash of energy directly to the viewer. A peak experience right there on the screen. Print it, frame it! Also a good demonstration of why dynamic range really does matter. Brilliance plus tonality! Until recently you had to pick one only. Was just thinking what an impossible shot that would be on my 5D2. If it really does have an extra stop of noise margin, the D810 could do even better at this type of shot, hand in hand with Lightroom.

That's about the number of actuations where my dear old D2X died on the job, demanding a $1,000+ repair bill. It is now my favorite paperweight. Every since I have been wary of carrying high mileage camera without a backup, which might be a good job for your old D800.

As with old cars, it's best not to drive cameras into the ground, at which point resale value goes from merely being low, all the way to zilch. The fact of life is, digital cameras don't last like those old film cameras which could be your best friend for a lifetime. IMHO, the dynamic range of the D800 series makes that an acceptable trade off.
