After over 5 years of pestering her, I finally talked my sister into letting me scan her collection of about 1,000 color transparencies. She had been storing them in some horrendous conditions and places and it is no surprise that a number of pictures suffered because of the poor storage.

One particular pattern that I have seen on a number of pictures is a spider web like pattern affecting one or more small spots on a picture. It actually has eaten down into the emulsion of the film. I have tried cleaning the film with anhydrous Isopropyl alcohol, but the spots remain. I assume that the film is permanently damaged and the best that I can do is try to fix the spots in Photoshop or Lightroom.

My basic question is if anyone knows what caused this kind of damage?

Thanks, Gary

Welcome to KTF.

Probably fungus, Gary. Slides and negative film are made from organic material. If stored under the wrong circumstances they can be damaged by fungus. The damage can be difficult to PP after scanning.

Yep, Mart is correct, those are Fungus/Mold. To my knowledge it cannot be cleaned from the film. Photoshop should be able to fixed to a certain degree if not all.
