Sony DSC-RX1/R (King of the Cyber-Shots) Picture Thread:

Yes, very nice! Shows how capable it is in many guises :-)

Thanks. David. The RX1/RX1r really is a versatile camera. More so than most folks give it credit for I think. I tried to post a variety of pics to show that. Two things I forgot to post are portrait and high ISO, so here they are. Portraits are my mom who turns 90 in October and the Grissom pic was handheld at 3200 ISO, f3.2 @ 1/30th sec.

BTW sorry that the exif data is missing from all my images. I didn't realize the preference was off for exif when I exported them from Lightroom. Will fix that in future posts.

Take care and enjoy your RX1 when you get it!

Wow. Hauntingly beautiful. Thanks for sharing it!

Your "most popular" photo is fabulous. I hope you have it hanging somewhere.

Splendid.

The interesting thing about this photo is it was lifted from this:

Got to love RX1 files.

I notice there are loads of RX1/R being dumped on the secondary camera market. Not sure if they are re selling well though, and getting the asking price.

It might be a good time to grab one up if you lust for one, or if overcome with bad case of G.A.S. ;)

Good luck.

Thanks.

Strange. I notice a white halo round some of the high contrast landscape stuff taken with the NEX, when I push them too. Wonder why it does it.

Wow. Great place!

How do you get that wonderful hyper-complex looking imagery, almost painterly? Ive try everything in LR to achieve it with other files of mine. Is it just an RX1 attribute with the right shots?

I do basic adjustments in Lightroom (exposure, shadows, highlihts, NR) and then go to Silver Efex Pro for B&W and Color Efex Pro / Viveza for color. I use different filters and try different stuff with pretty much every shot and some of the look comes from that software. I try to stop short of looking too fake/HDR like, but sometimes I fail. Some people like how I process and some don't, but I can't seem not to go for that look.

Where the RX1 comes into it is the quality of the files. It just seems I can do pretty nearly anything I want with those files and they'll still look pretty good where lesser files start breaking down, showing more halos, shadow noise, etc, etc, etc, etc. The RX1 files give me more latitude than anything I've ever worked with. I think it's probably the incredible DR of the sensor that makes it possible, but whatever it is, it makes a difference... I had a similar experience with the Nikon Df and I'm sure I'd find very much the same with the D610 (which has the same sensor as the RX1) or D800, which also has a lot of DR. I guess it's a full frame thing. I've never found this level of malleability with any APS camera. The Sigma foveon sensors come sort of close, but they're a whole different kettle of fish...

This camera is probably the finest piece of technology I've ever owned. And the fact that it's a sony adds to my surprise.

Here are a few portraits, including two at high ISO. All but the dog originated as in-camera jpegs (I shoot raw plus b&w jpeg). Even the jpegs, it seems to me, are very malleable. While many people may not consider a 35mm lens to be much of a portrait lens, the beauty of the RX1 is that it is relatively portable and discrete, which allows you to more easily photograph people and things in what one might call their native environments.
