At first glance, I thought this was a pretty exciting new camera. But once I looked at the size, weight and price, I thought...I can do better with a number of smaller mirrorless cameras...like Fuji XA1 with two lens combo, for one. Weighs less, smaller in width and height...if not length, and costs less. Larger sensor...so although initially jazzed with the FZ1000, not so much for now.

I'll keep an open mind for when the reviews come in, and admittedly it avoids having to carry two lenses plus has a faster lens. So I guess those two things might weigh in its favor for some people.

But for me the combination of Sony RX100 and Fuji XA1 (or a number of other small mirrorless cams) with 50-230mm lens seems superior.

Having said that, now I'll duck for cover.

My combo is nex 5n with kit lens and epm2 with 40-150. I alsomix in s95 and sx260 as needed.

I don't like changing lenses but don't mind carrying extra equipment. I am not a pro ( sold my sigma 30mm because i was fine with the nex kit lens).

Larger sensor/fast fixed lens/low cost are the factors which set this camera apart from everything else in the market, so, yeah, that will appeal to some people.

Photo-Wiz scratched his head and began to doubt his initial infatuation with the voluptuous FZ1000. This flirtation wouldn't last, he sensed. And then he said:

The Sony RX100 runs $498-649 depending on whether it's on sale and the Fuji XA1 will cost you $449-599. Even the sale prices on both cameras will cost you more than the FZ1000 at the MSRP. That price will be coming down before long.

The FZ1000 weighs 831 g (1.83 lb / 29.31 oz).

The Sony weighs 8.5 oz.

The Fuji weighs 11.7 oz.

If you carried both the Sony and the Fuji, you'd still have over 20 oz of camera weight.

I can't think of many instances where two cameras with one being an interchangeable lens system camera, won't beat a single fixed lens camera. Not hard to beat one camera with two for differing uses. You're kind of stacking the deck against the fz.

I came to a similar conclusion after my initial excitement over the FZ1000. The thing is that for stills, the X-A1 trounces the FZ1000 in IQ (as one would expect), and the two lens solution is smaller than the FZ1000. On the other hand, the FZ1000 advantages are speed for action shots, video, more direct controls, a fast zoom, and no need to switch lenses (so long as the 25-400mm range suits all of your needs).

From someone who's dumped all his FF DSLRs I'm not quite ready to embrace another APSC size DSLR
Granted it has most everything one needs in one single package it's not for me
I' m however more interested in the LX8 which basically will have the same innards as the FZ but with a shorter focal lens and a smaller form factor
The FZ is too big a camera to carry everywhere
The LX is
I still have the MFT gear for other more serious shootings
But I can see the FZ being the end all camera for a large group of people who want a bit more IQ and reach than their iPhone
Cheers ;-)

I'm not very familiar with Fuji, what lens is going to give you 400mm f/4 ? And what does it cost ?

And what I've read is the Fuji is pretty horrible for video. True ?

I understand the point about multiple cameras, I just don't understand why you're picking a Fuji over a Sony or some other option that doesn't cost so much ?

Even with the 50-230mm Fuji lens, you need only a bit of cropping to get to 400mm. The Fuji sensor is at least 2-stops better, which makes up for the slower lens.

On the X-A1 video isn't horrible, but it's not that good. Folks wanting video don't buy Fuji.

The X-A1 kit cost me $399 CDN (about $367 US) with an excellent 16-50mm lens. Couldn't find anything else comparable in the price range. It's one of the best cameras I've owned (been shooting with Canon bodies for over 20 years). ISO 6400 SOOC is very good.

I agree. If you want video, then Fuji is not for you. I hardly ever use video on any of my cameras.

When it comes to pure IQ, it is frankly very hard to match or beat a Fuji. whether it is an XE1, XE1, XM1, XA1 or XT1. If you put the 50-230mm on the Fuji XA1 (which I have) I think (although haven't got the specs in front of me) that it ways less that the FZ1000, and is smaller in height and width. I think it probably sticks out in length a littler further than the FZ1000. But it will cost less (include the 16-50mm lens, which is also wonderful) and likely to give you IQ better than the FZ1000.

But if video is important to you, then skip the Fuji and get the FZ1000.

"trounces" was a provocative word, so I checked it out:

........................and I'm going to have to go for the FZ1000 results here.

Not in the same league, but damm its big compared to something like the Stylus 1 ...

We need Olympus to get into the 1" sensor race, go go go ...

Where are you getting deals on Fuji's ? At Amazon the xa-1 and 50-230mm would cost $800.

Two totally different cameras. I don't get the size comparison. Wasting bandwidth.

Sounds about right. Sometimes Fuji puts lenses on sale. But at $800, the combo is about $100 less that the FZ1000.

Hey, all , just because a camera might have a 1" sensor doesn't mean it suddenly has DSLR-like IQ. I shoot mainly DSLRs and now also own a Nikon J1 (1" sensor). I don't know how much someone can reasonably crop , say, a Sony 1" sensor with 20 MP but not much with my J1. It is what it is, great IQ if you don't crop, OK indoors if you don't force it. I can crop my D5100 and D5200 (16 MP and 24 MP) 100% with hardly any loss of quality. And, shoot inside a mine at midnight with the lights off. Just kidding.

The FZ1000 is an interesting camera but it isn't the ultimate camera with HEY! a 16x optical zoom!! It's going to have a bit better IQ than your FZ200 but won't blow it away.

I've been looking at shots from my now long-sold FZ50 and what a lens! So clear and crisp. And the sensor? ISO 400, no higher. 35mm wide angle (:-( the symbol for the emoticon to the left is for a Sad Face I wish there was an emoticon for a face palm here at DPR but maybe it wouldn't show up either). Manual zoom!! Terrible video. So much promise unfulfilled.

I don't know, slap a 1" sensor in it, start at 25mm, today's electronics, is that the FZ1000?
