Time lapse App review for Sony A7R

Is this the cable needed to attach to the Satechi intervalometer?
Is this the cable needed to attach to the Satechi intervalometer?

So its the Satechi intervalometer and the Sony multiterminal cable with the usb plug, cut the Sony cable and attach to the Intervalometer cable?

Its a little confusing as there are 2 pictures or different cables. That last one looks like a stereo system or DVD player cable. The earlier one was a usb mini plug with a multi terminal plug - is that the one?

For that matter it may not be important which intervalometer you use?

Greg.

oh boy, its explained quite well but i'll try again

there is an expensive cable that costs about $30

than there is an inexpensive one about $15 on amazon and arrives in 2 days.

you can use either one...you have to chop off the end so it does not matter which one you choose.

point is it has to be a genuine 15pin micro usb cord - you can not use an "el cheapo" micro usb cord - there is a picture that clearly shows why it wont work plus my on personal findings that it simply wont work.

you want a real intervelometer for the sony a7r?? you have to hack one, you can not buy one, sony in their infinite wisdom never made one available.

the link above is the recommend one since its cheaper....and will do the job, ignore the RCA jacks, just chop those off.

This the expensive one, more like a pigtail but ya gotta chop off the end. this one designed for handycam. we only care about the multi sync usb part of it.

so to sum it up, you chop the end off than splice the cables from your own intervelometer.

several examples have been posted on this thread. I used a satechi wireless because it can be both wireless or wired thats the key advantage. its good for selfies or when on vacation, put camera on tripod and use remote to take picture of you and your family as you lean on the bridge or at the beach.

Some of us have more than one intervelometer, simply pair up the wires as shown in the picture which clearly shows what color goes to what color. i personally prefer Phottix remote because the buttons are easier to tap, smaller and has an on/off switch.

hope this helps. if not i recommend reading from the first page which explains in good detail step by step. along the way ppl have chimed in to help us figure out there are cheaper alternatives for the usb cord.

Ok, I have figured it out!! After tons more searching last night, I know how you did it/ what needs to be done. I am going to start building these cables and selling them like candy!

The Sony Multi Terminal has 10 extra pins on top of the 5 for the micro USB. The ones that control the focus/ shutter are on the multiterminal side and not the micro USB side. So there is still a need for a Sony specific multi-terminal cable, but you can get them from BH for $20 HERE

canon_pinout.png

R1 ("C") = ground / shield -> outer ring
R2 ("F") = activate camera / focussing -> middle ring
R3 ("S") = release shutter -> center pin

New Sony Multi Terminal:

M1 VBUS (+5V in, max. 2A)
M2 USBD-
M3 USBD+
M4 USB_ID
M5 GND
--
M6 +2.8V to 3.1V out (for LANC_DC etc. (possibly up to 8V?))
M7 reserved (serial interface?)
M8 Serial Tx | LANC_SIG
M9 Serial Rx
M10 SELECT (resistor against M6 or M14)
M11 Audio R out | Microphone R in | activate camera / focussing
M12 Audio L out | Microphone L in | release shutter
M13 Composite video out
M14 GND
M15 POWER_ON

Not all functions may be provided by all camera models.

3-pin to Multi Terminal adapter cable based on a hacked Sony VMC-AVM1 cable:

M11 -- middle ring ("F") -- R2
M12 -- center pin ("S") -- R3
M14 -- outer ring ("GND") -- R1

Easy as pie!

Thanks for the review ninja.. I bought the timelapse apps too and noticed the complete lack of feedback/ support on these apps... money not well spent.

I want my timelapse app to do 1 thing with 2 parameters only.. thats it.... trigger the shutter at x intervalls and y times. The rest of the options can be controlled by the standard configuration. i.e ISO speed, F-stop, image size, raw/jpg.

The app can't do that... which is pretty amazing.... Fiddling with custom I seem to be stuck with something that almost works... except that it only seems to read exposure needed for the first shot.... so if it gets darker or brighter all the other pictures are ruined.

Ps I have the a6000... I use it mostly with my 10-18 for wide angle shots and 30 F3.5 for macro shots.

I don't know why you guys keep ended up with the overpriced cable.

I just want to clarify this.

So if you get the Satechi wireless intervalometer and that Sony multi terminal cable adapter they connect to the A7 (I have A7r) and it works?

Greg.
Pretty sure it will. The A7/A7r/A3000/A5000(?)/A6000 uses the same multi-terminal cable.

Last I checked, there is no such thing as Sony multi-terminal cable adapter. You will have to build your own:

VMC-15MR2 + RCA-female-to-3.5mm-male + 3.5mm-male-to-2.5mm-male
wont it look real ugly? plus extra parts??

my method is remote + cord + camera

requires the Special Sony cord.

VMC-15MR2 AV replacement cable - this solution will work, costs about $12 and can be arrive at your door in 2 days. if you can wait and want a cheaper one

This is the cheapest and quickest solution to the cord required. This cable has the proper 15pin usb connector - simply cut the cord, strip the wires and connect your wired/wireless cord to this one. No need for adapters or anything like that. Use shrink tube and you wont notice the difference, it'll look like you bought it!!

here is my final end result. looks professional, its simple, i can connect direct to camera or use the wireless.

if you have another brand of remote trigger it should also work but i've not tried yet maybe others can chime in and let us know. I have a phottix remote, i've ordered the cord and will report when i've done that one too as it was used for my Nikon cameras. The cord used in that picture cost me $28 vs the one on amazon which is way cheaper and does exactly same thing as the expensive one, either way ya gotta chop it so it dont matter whats ont he other side, its the 15pin usb connector we care about.

The AV cable will likely not work since it does not have all the wires for the connector. Just because the connector is the right one - the wires coming out of it may not be the correct ones for the pins you want.

hey i jsut want to help others and Sony needs to read these threads and wake up. make better apps.

AET

there should be an option to let you enable 3 modes, lo, med, hi AET which basically tracks the exposure levels and increases the shutter speed as it gets darker. this is only available on custom mode but i'm using an A7R so i dont know if its same for a6000, i would think app is same for any camera.

i'm pretty damn sure it will, its labeled as a multi terminal cord and has the 3 cords its needs, in a few days when i get mine...I'll post pictures to prove it works, I'm gonna marry it to a Phottix remote

so stay tuned...

Proven to work 4 months ago by James206:

And I personally verified it:

Good for you then - why on earth would the video/audio out cables be connected to the pins that control the shutter and camera wakeup/half-press pins? Must be purely by chance . . .

Nope. A time lapse is not included with the A6000 or other cameras. This has been a gripe for some users. The only available time lapse for Sony cameras is the app through the PlayMemories store, and you must purchase it.

I may had seen that one, but it did not go in to the detail I was looking for.

I choose to spend the extra $3 (depending on where you get the cable and include shipping) for the nicer looking single cable because I do not like the look of the 3 stranded RCA cable. The ones that I will make will look OEM. They will still function just the same, but look a whole lot less hacked.

I found the single sentence

"if you short the red (right audio) it will focus, and then shorting the white (left audio) will trigger the shutter."

is all the details I need.

Yes, it is your money after all. But I must be missing something here. Aren't you going to cut the cable anyway? What difference does it make? The short length of VMC-AVM1 means not much room for mistake when stripping wires.

However, if someone figured out a way to tap into other functionality of VMC-AVM1. Like using a timer to start / stop video or adjusting zoom. The premium would be totally worth it.

Ah that did the trick nina..... I never realised that was the baby to set.... not sure why the default would be to completely trash the timelapse :)

thanks

Those looking at cutting and splicing cables to use with existing timer remotes might try this...

Looks like exactly the cable everyone has been looking for at a reasonable cost.

I would have bought one to try but of course they won't ship to Australia for whatever reason.

Looks promising though.

Looks like merchants finally saw the opportunity. Great find!
