Formatting causes file number to reset to 001, Stylus 1

I just got my Stylus 1 and have gone through the menu and manual repeatedly but can't find why formatting my memory card causes the file numbering to go back to the same date and file number. For instance, today my file numbers started earlier with P6130001. And after I copied those to my computer and formatted the card today, the same day, the new photos have the exact same file number. I am not using the menu option to reset either basic or full so that isn't it.

When you look at the lcd, the camera shows the next file you take after formatting as 100-001.

Anyone know why this is happening?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I figured it out. Kind of obscure but it is there in one of the menu items and then under an option called "record". All is well. Cathy H.

Hi Cathy,

Please explain in more detail how to prevent this from happening.

Thanks!

Don't have my Stylus 1 handy - but do have my EM10 nearby and all the Olympus settings are pretty similar.

In the GEAR settings, there should be a sub-menu called Record/Erase. In that menu there is a setting File Name. Setting it to AUTO will keep the weird numerical sequence from resetting. Setting it to RESET will (I believe, never left it set to that) reset the numbers each time you either format or put in a new SD card.

Yes, that's exactly how it works on the Stylus 1 and what I did to fix the problem. I definitely think this is obscure. On Canon cameras it's not buried like this so you can find it and fix it easily. On the other hand, the Stylus 1 has a heck of a lot more customizing options and perhaps that requires a more complicated menu.

On the SH-50, RESET is the first item on the first (of five) menu screens. The options are YES and NO. The default is NO. Reformatting the card does NOT affect the numbering, regardless of which method of formatting I use (in the camera by the camera, in the camera by the laptop via the USB cable, or with the card in the laptop SD card slot).

I am getting more and more convinced that the Stylus 1 has its roots in the C-750UZ from 2003. The Stylus 1 has the same quirks. Saved custom settings cannot be edited, they have to be re-entered afresh. The lens stays open when the battery dies. And now it appears that the RESET default is YES when relying on the camera firmware.

These are the most basic reliability issues that should NOT re-surface in an enthusiast camera twice the price of the SH-50. The only reason I can see why Olympus is getting away with it is, the Stylus 1 is adopted by first-time buyers.

Let's hope that one of these days Olympus will completely re-make their menu system into something that's better suited to human beings with finite patience and memory!
