Does this seem sharp?

Have you ever thought the problem might be your dog and not the camera?

This breed is known for their softness and are not very sharp.

Return the dog.
ROTFL!!

This is my post of the week.

At the risk of being accused of having low standards, I'd say the eyes are sharp enough.

However, I only viewed the snap at 100%. Perhaps at 200% or 300% I would see that focus is off by a millimeter.

Sigh, the curse of low standards.
Not sure if I have a bad camera?

Mr Ichiro Kitao, I support the call to upgrade the FZ50.
I will not only buy one but two no questions asked...

I say, soothe yourself, not the photographer's fault. Not the eager canine's...see, he's just asking, "Won't you jump into the water and play?"

I would blame the weatherman for bringing you the gloom. A few rays of sunshine would have brought a few f-stops and...more DOF!

Lol, if you had waited for the dog to turn its head towards you, then your image would be more 'Neil-like'. Either way, I would still give Neil the award - your image would only capture the eyes, and not the snout, in focus and I can't even see the tail!

I think that you also should add a camera/owner alert for shallow DOF images :)

This is by far the sharpest dog here.

Would be great especially under indoor lighting only, just to compare, this was with only available kitchen lighting at night...EM1 did very well with 42.5 f/1.2, it should, the 42.5 is excessively expensive, but a very nice lens that performs flawlessly and AF works no matter how dim the light or how backlit the subject is, so yes very expensive but very impressive...

That is a fairly well lit scene actually requiring a 7.3EV exposure and also good contrast. It also helps that the dog has grey and black hair.

The lens looks fine, albeit a bit too expensive for what it is: 85mm f/2.4 equiv.

Ok, I will help.
  • Turn off lock-on-af
  • AF-S
  • Flexible spot, small size
  • "A" mode
  • ISO auto
  • Center weighted exposure
Point camera so that focus box is on the eye, half press to lock focus, recompose, fully press and shoot.

If this is the 16-70 or 18-105 lens, it doesn't really need stopping down, but you might try to stop it down a bit, to make the DOF is little deeper. f/5.6, or f/9 even, light permitting.

Always best to focus on the eyes. Problem with things like wide area and zone, is that it will end up focusing on whatever is closest. Lock-on-AF can totally screw up portraits! It's scan around for closer features attached to the subject. That becomes the nose in no time. Not good. So, small size flexible spot, just placed in the center, combined with AF-S, is probably best.

Another thing to look at is watch out the camera doesn't make the exposure too slow. 1/60 for a dog that won't pose still, is bad. So, perhaps instead of auto ISO, set the ISO to something, where the exposure becomes more like about the 1/250 range or so...

Another option is to use "M" mode and set ISO to auto, but that's too crude, possibly....
