Separate forums for A7/A7R/A7S Full Frame and NEX/A3000/A6000 Crop Frame

Thanks for doing that Jerry.

NEX posts dominate, as expected, given how long they've been around.

Somehow A7/A7r/A7s forum participants manage despite the NEX overload. ;)

Is at all possible to get the Sony forums split up like the Canon ones by not only mount but sensor size? I know there are users that own both but its a pain sorting through the chaff of one or the other.

A simple request.
First, if you think its easy to find a post about this subject before I posted this your kidding yourself. Second it appears others do want this and expressed their desire previously but no action was taken. Third maybe DpReview should use the approach on FredMiranda and we can find every non-Nikon, non-Canon post in "Alternative Gear & Lenses". That way we can weed through the post on Olympus, Pentax, Fuji, Sony, Sigma, Leica, Ricoh, Contax, Zeiss, Voigtlander, and Panasonic all in one large forum.
Give me an example of what specifically you were most recently looking for and could not find (given your posting history).

What I appreciate about this forum is how fine an example of a first-world problem the topic is.

I mean that with all sincerity.

If we get busy enough here - as is, the forum, albeit active, is not overly frequently visited.

Just watch the average time between posts - we are hovering around what, 20 post an hour, tops?

Split that and you get two quiet forums. Pretty boring by itself, and it will send people elsewhere.

You may not like the topics that you open up, but that time wasted clicking on the wrong posts keeps the ticker going and increase the web activity and value.

No, I see little benefit from splitting up the forum - unless our user group grows significantly :)

Cheers,

We could have several separate forums that way and there would be no need for anyone in one forum to ever speak to anyone from a different forum! Just think of the advantages. Think Segregation!

Split would be:

14mp forum, then 16, 20, 24, and 36 with more to come!

Oh, what bliss!

Agreed.

Agreed.
The 'split' frequency (not likely to be a 50/50 split) will no doubt increase for both E and FE cameras when questions and picture posts are no longer snowed under by the rush of unrelated gear talk people aren't interested in reading about.

At worst, the post traffic for each group will stay the same - how would that be so terrible? The only difference would be not taking as long to sort our what you're interested in, or require gear-specific filters that don't catch everything.

The real question is whether there are enough people with a7, a7r and a7s cameras to maintain a lively forum.
Let's address the question with some data: I'll start collecting now and see where we are in a few days or weeks.

Looking at the number of posts started in each category of E-mount camera, I find these totals as of today, a few minutes ago (about 8:20pm Chicago time, 9 June 2014):

Sony NEX cameras: 14939 = 6695+2765+2589+1137+535+459+252+216+159+132

Sony Alpha cameras for E mount (a#000): 1629 = 1560+67+2

Sony Alpha cameras for FE mount (a7/a7r/a7s0): 4617 = 2644+1896+77

I expect this third category, the full-frame category, to be lively both in the near future and the longer run, but we'll see by the numbers, okay? We'll reserve judgement until we see the number of threads started in each category from now on.
41 hours later, we have these totals:

NEX: 14947 = 6696+2770+2590+1138+535+459+252+216+159+132

Alpha E: 1648 = 1578+68+2

Alpha FE: 4640 = 2656+1904+80

Thus, the net results so far are

NEX +8 (mostly for the NEX-6)

Alpha E +19 (mostly for the alpha a6000)

Alpha FE + 23 (all three models increased as you might expect)

So the Alpha FE new posts account for 46%, so far. That's a good sign for Camley's concern about adequate liveliness of an FE forum.

We might wait a bit to see how this plays out with more data, but so far Alpha FE posts are perhaps surprisingly plentiful during this time with the Alpha a6000 being by far the "most popular camera" on DPR.

115 hours after we started, we have these totals:

NEX: 14968 = 6703+2778+2590+1140+535+462+252+216+159+133
