I'm looking at BG for my new 70D, The canon one is good but I want to know if anyone have used a 3rd party one and if yes, what are your pro / con?

I have the pixel vertax grip for it and it feels great. One thing I liked about this particular brands, is that it actually has a cutaway for your thumb on the vertical grip. The other Chinese brands, the grip is pretty much straight up and down, and not as comfortable (I had a neewer one that I returned immediately because of this. )

I bought a 'BM Premium' for my 70D, it accepts 2 EP-E6 or 6 AA batterries, has a few extra buttons for operating the camera and has good quality. On the other hand I bought a 'Vello' from B&H for my D5100 and that one has flimsy constrution, I would certainly stay away from that brand.

I bought a Neewer from Amazon for $43 US. It fits well and feels solid. It also holds either 2LP-6 batteries or 6 (I think) AA batteries. I've been happy with it so far.

I bought a Pixel off ebay, I have a Canon grip for my 30D
Pixel is great was less then $40.00 on ebay. would recommend it

"The fact is that relatively few photographers ever master their medium. Instead they allow the medium to master them and go on an endless squirrel cage chase from new lens to new paper to new developer to new gadget, never staying with one piece of equipment long enough to learn its full capacities, becoming lost in a maze of technical information that is of little or no use since they don't know what to do with it."

I am using a Neewer from Amazonon three week old 70D. I have the brand on my 60D for a year absolutely no issues. Highly recommend.

Here's two pictures showing what I mean

first, the pixel with cutaway like the canon one

then, the neewer/meike/etc one without cutaway

Having had both in my hands, I can say I find the pixel one to be a lot more comfortable to hold because of this

+3 for the Neewer. No issues at all.

I use Back Button AF and the thumb sits naturally right at the AF-ON button.

R2

+4 for the neewer grip.

Fits well and works flawless. Absolutely no problems and only $43 on amazon.

I went for the Vertax and it feel great in hand great grip feel a bit plastic but overall feel really nice. and yep the thumb rest is great.

This is useful info, thanks. Though at the point of the thumb it seems like both are pretty close since the non-Pixel model seems to have a wider cutaway throughout the length of the unit and where the thumb rests it seems like the cutaway width is close. The cutaway width doesn't look as pronounced because it already started wider.

I never had them at the same time to compare, but this is likely true. Maybe psychological, or maybe just feels like a firmer grip with my thumb in a cutaway area - I just know I immediately didn't like the neewer one, and the pixel feels great in my hand. But, that's just an opinion! (and we know how terrible opinions are)

Might also be that the Pixel version could give the flesh under your thumb a nicer resting place whereas the other one doesn't give as much due to the cutaway here being wider under the thumb. Just a thought. It would be nice to have them side-by-side for sure. Anyway, thanks for bringing up the differences. I don't even have the 70D (yet) so I am in no rush :)

I have the Neewer and find it uncomfortable. It's too square, chunky and fat. I can't imagine this being comfortable aside for people with giant hands.

If you are thinking of getting the Pixel model, let us know how you go :)

Hello, tr573! Purely based on your inputs I have also purchased a Vertax just now. Hopefully, it will be better than other brands as you suggest. Will place my comments here for you and others in a couple of weeks. Thanks!
