New Samyang/Rokinon line of lenses for Fuji X

Sometimes one puts different qualities of lenses on a camera because they are of different quality.

One is using them for what they are, rather than for what some pixel-peeping techno-geeks say they are not.

This is usually called creativity.

Although there is a new 8mm X-mount Fisheye II, I have no need to upgrade as mine seems perfect. In case anyone wants to see how it looks on a Fuji....

Note: the new 12mm f/2 is a mirrorless lens, about the same size. The new 10mm is a DSLR lens designed to fit Fuji which means it is much bigger and heavier, about 2 1/2 times heavier and does not accept filters

8mm - maybe they will have a big sale to get rid of the old fisheye stock. If so grab one.

And.... evidently, someone thinks mirrorless cameras are NOT disappearing from the market - no matter the faltering edges of camera sales in general.

The Samyang 35/1.4 and 85/1.4 are very good. If the 12/2 is anything like those, I'm definitely getting one.

One thing to watch out for is adapted wide angle lenses generally don't work well on Xtrans, so I'd wait for reviews on a Fuji body.
The Samyang 35mm does not make any sense to buy because it costs $550, the Fuji which has AF actually costs less, $450, so I wouldn't even bother with that lens, for the people that are interested in the 35mm focal range. I personally hate 35mm :-)

Thank you for explaining that but all the creativity in the world, wouldn't do much to improve my snapshots.

Maybe I'll just fit the bottom of a Coke bottle onto my camera; it's much cheaper than any lens and optically better than some. :-)

I believe that $450 price is with the instant rebate but having AF (even slow AF), would be worth it to me.

It's based on seeing your results with this lens that has it on my short list. The only thing that would give me reason to go with the series 2 version would be if they added an extra aperture blade to the design giving it seven so it would give 14 point sun stars instead of the current six point which I personally don't find very pleasing. If not, I'll just wait for the version two lens to be released and pick up the original at close out pricing.

Scott,

Its a great lens and it seems, at least at BH, the price difference is only $20 plus 2% rebate on the older version so about $26. The newer version is listed with Three extra-low dispersion elements and two aspherical elements, so I think that might be the difference, another element but the older version seemed fine.

No info if the new one has a different set of aperture blades. My guess is they left that alone but that is just a guess. I agree, a different set of aperture blades could make better sunstars, the current design stinks in that regard and the Fuji 14mm has curved blades so stars don't really star until f/14 or so and are puny. My old 15mm Voightlander was superb and was my old Nikon 10.5mm fisheye for DX body.

 Rokinon 8mm sunstar about f/8
Rokinon 8mm sunstar about f/8

I have Samyang 8mm fisheye Sony emount and 24mm F1.4 Nikon mount. The 24 I had to send back for a 2nd copy because one side was out of focus whilst the other was in focus. The 2nd copy is good. Quite large and heavy though. Coatings give a warmish look.

It is sharp has little to no CA, build quality is good - all metal, aperture ring, focus ring. Not quite Fuji standard but no complaints on the build quality of the 2 I have. It showed some coma at F1.4 which cleaned up by F2 also some CA that also cleaned up by F2. Not enough to be a worry at all.

The 14mm is popular but has moustache distortion. From what I have seen and read that is an issue with scenes with close in objects as well as far away objects. Landscapes of far off objects don't seem to show the distortion.

So I think the main thing with the 10 and 12mm would be whether Samyang have corrected this distortion issue or not with the new lens.

Greg.

Hi Valentino,

Definitely, I cannot wait any longer; I badly need a fisheye for my beloved X-A1. As far as I can see basically I have three options:

(1) Walimex/Samyang 8 mm fisheye II (Fuji X mount) for about 400 EUR

(2) Walimex/Samyang 8 mm fisheye (Fuji X mount) for about 300 EUR

(3) Nikon/Sigma/Tokina/Whatever 10.5 (or similar) mm fisheye for about 500 - 600 EUR, since I already have a quite decent Nikon G - Fuji X adapter.

Your help would be highly appreciated.

I'd like to take fun photos like this. My daughter loves fisheye, too: her lens kit for the A7 has only two lenses FD 80-200mm/f4L and MD 16mm/f2.8 fisheye.

My standard lens-kit for the X-A1 would be:

- PEN F 150mm/f4 (I already have it)

- PEN F 38mm/f1.8 (won, paid and waiting to arrive)

- XC 16-50mm kit-lens

- a fisheye lens (see above)

All the best and Thank You, Miki

This might help..

Here's another article of interest:

Based on the reviews and comments I've read and the photos I've seen, I'm about ready to pull the trigger and order this lens. An 'only used twice' original version just sold on ebay for $220. I'd have bid, but shipping to S.A. is crazy expensive for individuals and just expensive for a retailer so it'd probably cost the same as ordering a new version II. Anyone have an opinion on if/when retailers will significantly lower the price on the original version? It's been out for a few months and being that version II only costs about $25 more it makes sense (to me) to just get the newer version. However, if the price for the original were soon to be deeply discounted/closed-out by retailers I might change my mind as I'm not entirely sure my amateur/non pixel peeping eyes would notice the difference between them.

You don't need to pixel peep to notice the difference which is however, small and depending on the post processing that takes place, immaterial. I don't recall any big samyang discounts for Fuji but I could be wrong. The Bower one is already discounted so I doubt it would go much lower than that. The opportunity cost of waiting might be bigger, depending on what you plan to shoot and when. Over here it's summer time so plenty of shooting opportunities!

I have the 8 and the 12mm for my X-M1. I had ordered the 14mm but was unable to focus at infinity so I returned it and bought the 12mm. The 12 is quite a bit smaller than the 14.

They're each quite remarkable lenses and for the price a real bargain I believe.

I have a few images here:

I will be happy to answer any questions you have about either lens.

Thank You, Charles, for the help. In my area the videographer's version of 8mm is cheaper by 100 Euros (30%) than the photographer's version. Your 12mm here is the videographer's version, too
How do you like it vs the photographer's version of the lens?

Thank You, Big for the link, and keep us informed with your progress and results. As far as I see the actual aperture number is not sent by the lens to the camera, and the EXIF will have no F values. Knowing this, I might go for the videographer's version.
Hi Apollon, I love your review a lot, thank you so much!

Here is my gift-photo to all of You, Fellow Photographers:

I hope soon I'll send you a couple of photos taken with my fisheye on the X-A1.

When I bought the 12, the Rokinon Cine was the only one not back ordered. (It was 10% more...lucky you)

Turns out I like it. Not at all stiff like my 8mm, no clicks, has large "geared" adjustment knobs, It's a bunch easier to adjust. It's also quite interesting to adjust f stop and see on the screen how it impacts various parts of the image.

I use the wides on an X-M1. Lenses rotate a bit inside the mount on this camera. It's quite disconcerting. I've called Fuji and they assure me that this is normal. The Cine version doesn't do this. It doesn't impact the image but it does impact my psyche.

As it's so much easier to adjust i do need to take a bit more care not to bump it.
