The SEL1018 love thread...

Did little Post processing. I did add the profiles to LR5 but its not showing up under profiles? am i doing anything wrong. Placed it under the user directory as advised by Rob.

I did manually reduce distortion by -5 and added little bit of vignetting. Did not crop. if there is a better way to do it please let me know. Thanks!
Beautiful photos!

Lets try again. Download from here:

Put all the lens profiles need to go into the following folder:

/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/LensProfiles/
/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/LensProfiles/

After that, they appear under the following profile:

Sony / E 10-18mm F4 OSS / SONY A7 + SEL1018FF
Sony / E 10-18mm F4 OSS / SONY A7 + SEL1018FF

Thanks Rob for the screenshots. I will give it a shot and get back to you!

Great pictures @polarth. simply WOW!!

Here is one more shot with the A7 and 10-18. Love the size of this lens. How many of you who own this lens would buy the FE 16-35 when it launches. Im guessing it will cost around $1200

Rob, Thanks a lot for this. It seems to have fixed my issue and the solution worked! Here is a edit with the updated profile settings

If I didnt get the Touit 12/2.8 from teh recent deals, I would have considered the 10-18.

The FE 16-35/4 will be quite a bit more and larger in size than the 10-18 like all FE zooms.

I processed the colors on these. The last one has perspective correction to straighten the missile--something made possible by having so much extra FoV at 10mm.

All amazing shots... I particularly love the timing of this one:
Seeing these photos (yours, and the other ones posted) really make me want to get out shooting!

Rob,

Would these profiles work on the A7R?

Rob,

Would these profiles work on the A7R?
I doubt it would work, as the profiles are based on camera models. I seem to remember taking an image created on someone else's A7R and attempting to apply my lens profile, only to find it conspicuously absent!

It's been a long time since I looked, but it's possible someone has in the meanwhile created one that you can download from the adobe lens profile downloader. You might want to try there, or better still, create one yourself like I 'attempted' to do... you'll need a couple of hours I think and for the SEL1018 a printer that can print at least A3 (A2 would be even better I think).

Rob,

Actually your profiles for the SEL1018 do work on the A7R. My question was more about what differences there would be if the profile was created for the A7R compared to the A7. I've tried the ones I could locate and yours seems to be the one that works best. I had found one on PhotoClubAlpha from David Kilpatrick but vignetting correction must be done manually. His are located here:

http://www.photoclubalpha.com/2013/12/03/using-the-10-18mm-oss-zoom-on-full-frame/

I took your profiles and renamed everything both within the files and the file name itself to A7R or ILCE-7R where appropriate with a text editor. They pop up fine in Lightroom and in fact, I have your original ones labeled A7 without any modification along with the ones I renamed to A7R and can select either with the same results. Therefore my renaming efforts weren't even necessary but I need to work on getting your profile to auto select along while importing. They are both available as drop downs under Lens Corrections>Profile>Profile along with David's profile as of now on my machine. I've never created a profile before so starting from scratch seemed daunting to me. As of this morning, there aren't any profiles for this lens on Adobe Lens Profile Downloader.

Here are test shot examples without any further adjustments in LR without profile correction, with David Kilpatricks profile and with your profiles. In all fairness David indicated in his blog that the profile he created would not correct for vignette. A quick adjustment with the Vignette profile slider to the left takes care of most of the vignette problem but I think yours is working better. You can see that with his, the corners start off way too bright and with a lot of problems.

Thanks for your work on this lens and the A7. It's produces good results on the A7R as well imho.

Regards,

Patrick

Question for you guys. If at the time you bought SEL 10-18mm the Rokinon/Samyang 12mm F2 was available would you still have picked SEL10-18mm?

What would be your single main reason to pick one over the other?

Also is SEL 10-18mm a dirt magnet because of the zoom?

If I had to start from scratch, for me it'd be an easy choice. The extra 2mm, along with the OSS would win me the loss of extra 2 stops of light on the Samyang. The main reason being that I actually shoot most my wide angle landscapes at F8 for maximum DoF anyway. When light was bad and I needed to shoot wide open, I've managed to get sharp results from the SEL1018 (due to the OSS no doubt) at as low as 1/8 shutter.

SEL1018 - Extra 2mm wide, and useful zoom if you want to frame. OSS. Works on Full Frame!!

Samyang 12mm - Lower Cost. Possibly the F2 for shoot nightsky without star trails.
Also is SEL 10-18mm a dirt magnet because of the zoom?
I've used it extensively for over a year and have no noticed any dust inside, perhaps I've been lucky. Although perhaps it's also a different usage pattern to say a 24-70 where you're constantly pumping from wide to narrow.

Anyway, whichever one you choose, I'm sure you'll get great results.

Hey,

Great to hear my profile worked out for you, that's good news. I'm surprised no-one else has gone to the trouble of creating a better one, but perhaps it's quite a niche usage (cropped lens on an A7(r)). If you're interested, here's roughly how I made it:

i rented the 10-18 and canon 17-40L and i liked the sony a lot. I did although like the canon's focal length and i believe this is where exactly the upcoming 16-35 FE will fit in. Are you guys planning to buy that once it releases or stick to 10-18?

One thing i really liked about the sony lens is the size and weight ratio!! The canon did feel front heavy

For me, beyond question I'd pick the 10-18mm again and again, every time. I had the 16mm + ECU1 for the 12mm optical, which did pretty well...but overall for me ultrawide shooting is about WIDE, so I'll always take more wide focal than anything else, and 10mm wins that game over 12mm for me. Also, much UWA shooting does tend to be more stopped down, so max aperture isn't quite as crucial for me. And adding in the variable focal range flexibility of a zoom to 18mm, and stabilization to boot, not to mention the convenience of autofocus, the 10-18mm is my choice every time on the e-mount. I also shoot with a 10-24mm UWA zoom on my DSLR, for the same reasons - 10mm on the wide end, zoom flexibility, and stabilization!
