I would like to see a cheap Panasonic 8-14mm 'kit like' lens

Agree: OSS is important for video; aparently some M43 cameras can do that quite well., though the EM1 video is not bad it seems with IBIS.

I have the Sony wide and love it, it does cover full frame but not at it's widest. I can only go down to 12mm with my current M43 lenses; waiting for something wider to tempt me- the proposed new Oly wide lens sounds good but is way out of my price range.

I was surprised by Oly bringing out another wide lens but I guess it is their push up the market and will be a "pro lens". It is clear from reading interviews that Oly and Pana are quite competitive with each other rather than cover the market between them I think they are just as likely to cover each others offerings instead and leave gaps elsewhere.

O.k. That's clear then. I seem to be the only one who thinks that this is a good idea.

Reading the reactions so far, I can imagine that Panasonic is not going to make the lens that I would like them to make, if they do some market research :-( . Now, back to stitching I must go.
Sony is your friend!

15-28 f4, takes a filter!!!!!!!! look for an ex-demo or ebay. with sony a6k, takes some beating.
And has several stops worth of vignetting even when stopped down.
It's just not as good as either the 7-14 and 9-18.
Not according to dxo, distortion is bad on the 7-14 and the 9-18 not to mention the very bad CA,
Apparently, you are unaware that lateral CA and distortion are auto-corrected at virtually no loss.
How distortion can be corrected with no loss?
I said virtually no loss. The reason is that the amount of corner stretching required is limited.
That's a meaningless statement everything is lens correction is limited. The question is what's the limit to image quality loss acceptance.

9-18 sharpness map cearly shows loss of corner sharpness, very likely due to distortion correction.
At max WA, the 10-18 shows the worst loss of sharpness towards the edges/corners.
I was talking about 'no loss' of 9-18, different lens that 10-18.

You can't say the same about several stops of vignetting that remain even with the lens stopped down. Or the lack of sharpness.
Vigeting can be corrected with no loss.
You are wrong.
You are wrong.

Plus, you're biased dismissing distortion corrections and complaining about vignetting.

overall, the Sony is the best lens and best value, it can be used with a FF body too
Oh sure. With what quality?
and is the only 1 with OIS?
Who needs OIS if you have IBIS?
You will not be able to better it on m43 and it takes a filter too, for wide-angle video hand-held on the A6K nothing comparable, sorry, and is a more flexible light solution that takes filters; its a good deal wider and faster than the Oly and the new 7-14 will overpriced and have the same limitation on filters! Sony 10-18 is the best overall wide for mirroless, no question ;-)
More hot air. How about changing your nick to ventsome?

it's so close to the Olympus 9-18mm which has a bit more reach

I guess you want a small lens even though the Oly is quite small already

Unless you have to have Panasonic instead of Olympus?

I'm not seeing the need for this lens at all

Cheers,
The 7-14 is expensive

The 9-18 isnt wide enough
You can just carry a fisheye lens/body cap and defish it to taste. I use the new body cap and it works pretty well for the rare cases when I need such a wide FL. This combination of lens + body cap is nice as it's small and covers up to 35mm in the long end.

Defished fisheye body cap

Neither have OIS and the 7-14 needs special filter holders(defeats m43)

M43 needs a competitive 16-24 (equiv range) lens with OIS? and equally a 200-400 (equiv) fast tele too!
The GX7 has IBIS; If Panasonic will add the tech to future models then the problem is solved.

In the recent past Panasonic has delivered a a nice set of small and light walkaround-zooms, with the 14-42mm mk II kit lens and the 45-150mm telezoom. I am very happy with the quality of those lenses.

What I am missing, is a small, light, slow 8-14mm zoom to use on a holiday. It would have to be positioned below the Olympus 9-18mm; as small as that lens, with the same build quality as the Pana 14-42mm mk II, with a plastic bayonet and probably not even with image stabilization. I would buy it immediately to complete my holiday walkaround set (now I am leaning towards the Olympus).

I was intrigued by the new Canon 10-18mm wide angle zoom lens, which is basically the same thing for Canon DSLR's (where they already deliver the 18-55mm kit lens and the 55-250mm telezoom with the same build characteristics).

Am I the only one missing this lens from the Panasonic lineup?
Agree with you. Canon is leading the way with the kit build 10-18mm. I imagine others will follow, the sooner the better.

...
I think you are misreading all the replies.

Everyboy wants one, but nobody has to say so because it is a bit ridiculous. We want everything ... but cheaper! Sure. :|

Small, wide, good and cheap.

Just go and buy the 9-18 and stop farting about.

Sure. I just don't understand why do you think vignetting correction casuses noise. Nosie was there already. Your assumption that correcting vignete causes any degradation to IQ is wring at its core. IQ is as registered by the sensor, there is no detail los, there is no noise increase, there is no resolution degradation.

I really can`t see this happening.

Firstly there is already an Olympus 9-18mm, so demand will be small.

And secondly the cost of development, Panasonic will struggle to recuperate this.
