one wonders what is going on, is the tax loophole they used being closed or is Canon putting pressure on them to make their 'minimum advertised pricing' policy more effective?

well, it's all our fault really...a few years ago HDEW was a little gem with low prices and excellent service. Then word spread around and probably Canon put pressure on them following complains from other on-line shops. The same happened with 7dayshop.com. They used to sell Canon gear at the low prices but all of a sudden they stopped.

We'll have to find another source now...

If the reason for higher prices is that the tax loophole is being closed (in the near future) you won't find another source. My impression was that EU will close the Gibraltar tax loophole this year, but who knows ... maybe they will introduce other loopholes so some well-connected multinational company can take advantage of them.

In general I think the photography retail business is very competitive, general price discounts of 20-25% on cameras and lenses are not possible with a level playing field. A tax loophole is the only way such discounts are possible on a continuous basis (in Europe, because of the high VAT), otherwise I would only expect such big discounts as special offers.

HDEW still massively cheaper than mainstream. 5D3 plus lens kit is £2,900 approx in the usual places but around £2,250 at HDEW. Portus Digital are even cheaper. Their reputation rather mixed compared to HDEW but probably still worth it.

6D from mainstream shops or 5D3 from HDEW? It's close...

5D3 body only £1949 with UK receipt and Canon honour the warranty, 6D body only £1095.

I would not say massively cheaper i bought my 6D for £1089 from HDEW cameras a bargain but now they are only about £80 cheaper, actually they are no longer showing the 6D for sale only the 5DMK3. Portus seems good going by the reviews , but i try to stick with good sevice & price like HDEW, but there prices have shot up a lot not just a tad.
