EM1: Can I see the exposure LIVE (or half pressing) through the EVF?

Being a DSLR user for several years, I was waiting to go m43rds for a long time, one of the main reasons was the EVF. I always hated to have to review in the LCD the pictures I take. I do mostly wildlife, and I've lost uncountable many pictures due to wrong exposure. WIth my old FZ50, horrible EVF by today standards, I virtually never missed the exposure, since half-pressing the shutter shows me what will be recorded.

Now, I got an EM1 expecting for the same. Indeed, in M mode, I see live the exposure in the EVF, even without having to press the shutter. Neat!

However, in A or S modes, this is not the case. It always shows the same exposure. It makes sense, you would say, because the camera compensates. Not quite: the camera cannot close the lens beyond the min aperture, so you can have underexposure. Yes, the exposure/aperture blinks when it can compensate, but you don't see this in screen. Even worse, it does not tell me even how many stops I am off.

Is there any way to tell the EM1 to show me the wrong exposure in A/S modes like in M mode? I run over the whole manual already, and I only found was in Menu > Gears > D (ix) LIVE VIEW BOOST, that I set to OFF.

Thanks!

I'm not too sure if this is what you are asking but I just tried out A mode and when I changed the shutter dial back and forth the light changes in the EVF. It shows you how many stops under or over you are and you can see while looking at it if you like it or not.

If you're in Aperture Priority mode you cannot change shutter speed directly, you are changing exposure compensation, and that will show up in the viewfinder like you described.

The reverse is also true - in Shutter Priority the aperture is controlled by the camera but you can dial in exposure compensation.

The EVF will change as you alter exposure compensation, but will show only to +3EV or -3EV.

Yes, this is ok, compensation appears in the EVF (if the corresponding menu config is enabled).

Yes. But what about exposure without compensation? Say, S priority, no compensation, with 1/2000s in the dark: I see the aperture wide open blinking, but a beautiful bright EVF...

Is it possible to tell the LCD to reflect the exposure, like in M mode or like Panasonic cameras do?

Thanks!

The camera is working the way Olympus intended. Any time you see a flashing shutter speed or aperture in the display it means the camera can not achieve a proper exposure with the current settings. As the manual states, you should adjust either the shutter speed or the aperture until the flashing stops.

This may not be the what you want but it is what the camera does. Get use to it. After you take a few badly exposed images you will learn to pay attention to the warnings the camera is giving you.

With SLR film cameras we had to wait two weeks to get the processed film back to find out we grossly under exposed our images. Appreciate the fact that today's EVFs tell you if the image will be under exposed before you press the shutter button.

No it still shows the Live View Boost when you press the DOF button. Any time the exposure is more than +/- 3 f stops off the 0 reading the camera displays the Live View Boost in A, S or P mode and flashes either the shutter speed or the aperture.

Of course, I'm a DSLR user and know how digital cameras work.

I just hoped there is a menu config that reflected the exposure in the OVF, as the one for M mode.

Cheers,

Not sure if the preview button is useful for you and whether it shows the exposure or the dof only
No, DOF only. Anyway, it wouldn't be practical.
