A couple of weeks ago, I went for a hot air balloon flight. It was awesome!

The scenery was spectacular and it was quite something to be hanging in a little basket at 2000 meters.

All pictures shot with an E-M1 + 12-40.

1. The balloon in its bag

2. It doesn't look like it, but this basket managed to fit 10 people

3. The "pilot" :-)

4. A fan was used to inflate the balloon

5. Much more volume than it appears to be!

6. View over the Swiss country side (lake Neuchatel can be spotted in the distance)

7. Another sight

8. This other balloon was with the same party (2 balloons total)

9. Notice the haze which made for a low contrast scene. I increased contrast quite a bit in pp

10. The sky started to change pretty fast; it started to look very dramatic :-) I love such skies.

11. Checking the 12-40's flare resistance: not bad at all.

12. We actually flew very close to the top of that farm. Fantastic sensations.

13. A pecular tree.

14. These cows were totally looking at us. They are very curious creatures :-)

15. An interesting view. As you can see the altitude was pretty low.

16. The sky is now getting very dramatic for our pure enjoyment

17. Flying over a small village. People were waving at us, it was very fun

18. It is actually very hot in the basket due to the heat produced by the flame.

19. About to land. The balloon kept flying like this until it landed on the path just behind this man.

I hope you enjoyed the series :-)

Thanks for looking.

Awesome shots.

Fabulous series! That is something I have yet to do - it is on my "bucket list"!

You've told the story very well :)

Nice shots!

If weather permits, I'll be going in two weeks!

How about the landing? Was the camera at any time in any danger? I am doubting what camera to bring, the EM1 or the RX100.

Fantastic. Hard to pick favourites. Maybe 10 (with a straightened horizon), 11 and 12.

Wow, these are some fantastic shots that you managed to capture. Awesome job!

My favorites are 9, 12, 14, & 17 -- but all are keepers. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite image. No. 13 would have been a show stopper with just a little better framing -- it still could benefit from some creative cropping.

I absolutely love the shot of the cows -- very unique image. I'm sure they were looking up hoping your were a special feed delivery person. :-)

Thanks for sharing these -- great job of capture and processing.

Please pardon some airy queries:
  1. Is that Lake Geneva in the background of one shot? I presume you flew over Western Switzerland.
  2. Does one have to negotiate landing rights in advance? Or do you negotiate with the owner of whatever land where the balloon comes down. I suppose it is not always possible to know where that will be?
  3. Would air currents and turbulence make hot air ballooning hazardous in the Alps proper?

VERY nice images. Some of the skies are very dramatic - that was great light.

Well done.

Brilliant set of shots, and a lovely telling of the story!

Some of these look like they are HDR - or have you done a lot to them in post processing? Especially the last one - it hardly looks real! I really like this look, and would be interested in what you did to achieve it. Thanks.

Thanks, I highly recommend it, it's an awesome experience!

Thanks.
The landing was pretty smooth. The basket touched tge ground and maybe dragged for 3 to 5 meters before stopping. No major shock so the camera was safe. I had a it in a small padded shoulder bag. I was told the basket can flip over at times... So it can be rougher.

Regarding your gear it all depends on your lenses. Which ones do you have?
I also had a 40-150 which I didn't even use once.
I took most shots at the WA setting.

Thanks. I hadn't noticed the tilted horizon. Cool I'll fix it :-) cheers.
