OK, I may be forced to eat humble pie, and take back everything I said about the Nikon store.

It may be UPS that is screwing me around. Wouldn't be surprising. I signed up for UPS select to try to change the shipping delivery date. One benefit is you get messages about pending shipments and delivered shipments. When I repeatedly checked UPS using the tracking number I got from Nikon, it said clearly the lens will be delivered on Friday. Sure enough, I believed them.

Now, I get a message from UPS saying the lens scheduled delivery date is today! Whoa. I don't know if that means the scheduled date was supposed to be today, and it's coming tomorrow, or if it is indeed coming today. If it does, I owe the Nikon store a thousand apologies and unreservedly take back everything I said!

Lesson learned: rant next time after ALL the facts are in, and don't jump the gun. I should have learned that a long time ago......

You should have put this in your original thread.

Well? Did you get it!!!???

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the delay in responding, but the 14-24 lens was actually delivered today (Monday) around lunch by UPS, about a week after I ordered it from the Nikon store. Nikon itself called and apologized for the delay, offered to refund my payment for express shipping, and also throw in some goodies. I appreciate their response, and consider the matter over.

Well, the best part of the news is the lens! And what a lens! I walked around my house on a gorgeous June afternoon, happily clicking away with my D800. Picture after picture came out gorgeous, wide-angled vistas with glorious edge-to-edge sharpness, bursting with color, saturation and intensity. All you expect to see when you combine a premium lens with a stellar camera. All is forgiven in my heart! I expect to spend many happy hours and years with the camera and lens.

Finally, I again apologize for my outburst. If any explanation is at all needed, I have just recovered from a series of two difficult surgeries due to a hyperactive thyroid. The lens was bought as a pick-me-up present to make me feel good about myself. For a while this spring, it looked like I would lose my vision and my camera clicking days would be lost forever. Fortunately, a team of brilliant physicians at Harvard Medical School did the amazing, and pulled out all the stops to save my vision through a highly innovative endoscopic method. I am indeed saved, my vision is 20/20 again, and I can enjoy my eyes and camera+lens for a long time again. The last surgery was successful this Friday, and I'm at home recovering.

What a joy it is to see the world again, and enjoy taking pictures! That's ultimately what all of us love doing here. I came close to losing that, but now my sight is regained!

I hope it brings you joy during your recovery.

Good to hear that to lens is giving pleasure. I had some minor eye surgery last year and although there was less than a 1% likelihood of an adverse outcome, I was worried enough about my photographic future. Now 20/20, thankfully.
