I have seen Nikon refurbs on eBay for £149 with 10-30 mm lens 12 months warranty.. whereas they usually go for approx £95 - £129 used.

They are Red but don't really mind.

I'm just wondering if the V1 is 'much' better and worth paying more? Can you get refurb V1s? (in UK)

I'm not in the loop on these models; though I have see enough to see the appeal.

I forsee me using either for informal video at weddings and supplementing the D7000 and D600 I have. I prefer the video from the D7000 vs the D600, but would like the greater (deeper) DOF of the Nikon 1 series and the better AF from them. Having a light weight carry cam instead of the DSLRs is worth mentioning too.

There's a thread going now.. 'J1 Stealthy Cam' that has inspired me to go with the J1 but I didn't want to highjack that thread with my questions.

The FT1 adapter sounds interesting but £175 for it, makes it a 'think about it' rather than 'get it straightaway'. I do have some AFS lenses and it would be intriguing to see what they do on a J/V1.

Any comments to stay simple or go advanced would be appreciated. I do wonder if losing M/A/S would make me regret not going with V1.. However I mostly shoot A mode on my DSLRs. Is there a program shift mode on either of these cams? V or J1?

Quality of the video in good or low light compared to Nikon DSLRs.... Anyone here shoot both? Should I be looking at something else for good video in this price bracket

So many questions.

Any comments appreciated.

PS - I have a redundant Nikon 16-85mm DX AFS VRII to help fund the purchase or swap. This should get me some way shouldn't it?

I started with a V1 at its original price (without regret) and then picked up a factory refurbished J1 kit with both zooms (for less than the normal price of the 30-110 by itself). So I got the J1 for free, and have found to my surprise that I'm using it more than the V1 because I like its smaller and more pocketable size (I also have the 10mm lens). It is a very capable body which will probably play a backup role to an eventual V3, and the V3 is becoming more appealing because of its modular design and ability to be stripped to J1 size.

I just got the J1. I also shoot mainly with DSLRs. If you're used to the benefits of shooting with DSLRs, don't go into the purchase of the J1 thinking that it's a DSLR-lite camera. It's a very competent point and shoot, mostly. Yeah, the 1" sensor gives pretty good IQ, it's speed of operation is pretty quick, it even shoots indoors under low light pretty well.

All of which means I'm keeping it, but if I am doing serious photography my DSLRs will always be in my hand. The J1 will be in my car for emergencies.

It's a different experience holding out a camera to peer at the LCD to compose my shots but I've gotten used to it. I fit right in with everyone else around me doing the same thing and so far security hasn't come running out screaming "what are you doing??" with the J1 in my hand, like they do when I'm shooting with a DSLR with (gasp) a lens hood on.

Alan,

If I'm not mistaken the only difference between the J2 and the J1, the J2 has higher resolution screen 920K vs. 460k, and few gimmicks added in the scene "mode". I'm in Canada, and I found the J2 brand new for 229.00 $ .I'm really tempted! One thing I don't understand though why the J2 scored lower compare the J1 on the DXO test?? after all is the same sensor...

Hi Alan

You will be happier when you collect your order. The kit package also includes a free half case as additional saving. I got one last week. Some functions such as flash, panorama, multi-expose to reduce noise in low light situation are not available in V1.
