602 overheat shutdown

I was out yesterday afternoon taking "road" pix when the 602 unexpectedly shut off -- without retracting. Of course I first thought it was spent batterries, eventhough they had not been used that much. But after changing to fresh batteries and continuing to shoot, it shut down again. The only thing I can think of is that I was shooting in the direct afternoon sun, likely 120+f here in Florida.

Has anyone else had this experience?

Nope, I did a 4 hour shoot, 500pix, in 120plus, then another 4 hours, 500pix at high humidity without a single incident. And everything was RED hot. The only thing I noticed was, the cam pushed me +1EV, but no big deal. I'm not saying there isn't some sort of Temp shutdown but I never saw it. I've also used it many times in over 100+ days. Sorry, I can't shed any light this time.

There have been a few reports of such spontaneous shutdowns, and I think that in at least one case the report was that it happened in a fairly hot outdoor setting.

A similar thing happened once to me: the batteries were very hot and all of the sudden the zoom stopped working. I switched off, waited a short while and everything was fine.
I don't know what happened, of course, but I thought about the heat as well.

Hi Pazooter,

I found a number of references stating that the operating range of NiMH batteries is 0 to +45C (32F to 113F).
Here's one:

Also, another source indicates that the discharge rate becomes faster with higher temperatures.

Inconclusive results here. While the PowerEx 2000 batteries did seem to inexplicably go flat all of a sudden while using in the hot sun, the replacement batteries were likely a mia culpa, having only thought I'd recharged them. (DomT will likely let you know for sure if I really am this stupid or not) I went out reshooting today without problem.
