Can anyone who has owned both comment on the differences?

I'm leaning towards the g1x mII. I loved my G9 until it died. I'm not sure I'm ready to spend so much in extra lenses or want the hassle of packing them.

Where and when will you take a compact camera? Will the attached lens serve your needs? If you want an equivalent lens or set of lenses, will you take that backpack with you or simply leave a small prime or small zoom on the camera and miss shots?

The G1 X II is a cross between a G camera and a DSLR/ILC. It's kind of like an M with a fixed lens, except for the difference in movie mode and other details noted here and elsewhere. The sensor is a bit smaller, but considering the sensor matches my 7D for detail reproduction, color, dynamic range, noise behavior, etc. I'd say the big difference here is just the difference in pixel count.

So, will you take the G1 X II with you more often, take more pictures, enjoy it more? If you're a G9 shooter and you want something with an amazing lens all in one package and small, then you'll probably get more use from the G1 X II.

I will take the camera on day outings, weekend trips, traveling etc.

I believe that the attached lenses will definitely serve my needs. I'm a simple photographer who wants simplicity over complexity and small/portable over extra lenses.

Yes, the G1x mii is small enough for me. I will carry it with a neck strap.

I do feel though, that $800 is a lot, and so therefore, am curious if the money wouldn't be better spent on a camera with better image quality.

I am also assuming that the EOS M mII solved a lot of short comings of the mI. slow focus etc.

I am pretty sold on the all-in-one simplicity and quality of the g1x mii, but am looking for alternate opinions and options for the same money.

thanks for the help!

I grab mine every time I leave the house and always take it on trips. Great backup for my 7D or walkaround, casual camera.

I moved to a wrist strap on my G1 X, but different strokes and all.

Define what you mean by "better image quality."

Hmmmmm....no idea.

They are different beasts. Image quality about the same. Lens selection using the adapter is nice if you don't mind the size. Otherwise, the Mark II lens is pretty amazing.
thanks for the help!

I have a G1x and an EOS M amongst others.

However, the G1x and G1x ll have virtually identical IQ looking at DPR files.

The M and Gx1 are both outstanding cameras. They both have great IQ.

The M has I think a slight edge in IQ. I cant tell the difference in IQ between the M and ANY of Canon's 18MP cameras, 7D included. You might if you examined the minutest detail at 200%,otherwise not.

The G1x comes close. I love the G1x; its a classic rangefinder style camera with all the knobs and buttons.

The M gets more airtime though.... Reason - I love its uncomplicated-ness and its' a sheer joy to use. I don't even know it's there half the time. No fiddling required. Solid build too, great size.

Very different cameras, close call as to IQ. Depends which feels more fun to use. Photography is about having fun. Only you can decide which makes you feel good about using it.

Thanks for this legit response!

Not looking for semantic ranting.

I'm still leaning mII then. For the all in one simplicity and compact size. Cheers.

I am considering both also. I am new to this forum (and not a troll). The major complaint has been on the M is the focusing speed. I am considering them for candid photography. Is the M acceptable? G1x acceptable. BTW, I shoot with a 5d m2 with Magic Lantern. Does ML work/ help the M?

Based on the just-released DPR review, the G1X mkII does not live up to its potential. The M looks better IMHO.

Hello Steve,

Don't know if this will help, 'cause neither camera will focus as fast as your 5D. I own the G1X and the M. First, the G1X is not as slow as all have said for the past 2.5 years, you just have to take time to set it up properly and shoot in the right modes (NOT AUTO as most people do). I have enjoyed that camera immensely for the past two years and captured some of my favorite images with it.

I recently purchased an M and am very impressed with it. It does focus faster than the G1X, especially when using the touchscreen shutter. Since buying the M (w 18-55 and 22), I have hardly used the G1X. I really am having fun with this cam and the images are great. The only images from it that disappoint me at all are due to my lack of familiarity with it. I would recommend it for candids, low light, or most applications, except for sports or long/large lenses.

One other thought, at this point, I don't think I want to upgrade my G1X to the MkII due to the following reasons:
  • Losing the articulating screen and limited OVF
  • Longer focal length, but not that much
  • Faster Lens - main temptation, but using the M in low light
  • Waiting to see if there will be an M3 or EF-M tele-zoom
Enjoying the M for now

ok thanks for this info.

Yeah, the only bad things I've heard about the M are the slow AF. I really like the idea of not needing to change lenses, but if I could get the M2 with 2 lenses for the same $800, maybe it's a good score.

Do you find yourself mostly using the M with the 22mm pancake? or with the longer kit lens?

I don't really need zoom for a particular style of photography. I just like the convenience of it.

If you just had the M with the 22mm, would that be enough for 90% of average photo subjects? Sorry if that sounds confusing. Is the M with 22mm pancake along enough camera for most peoples day to day shooting needs?

thanks for the input.

PS this thread is starting to stink of T.R.O.L.Lsss what's up DPR? kick these guys out already!

I personally use the 18-55 mostly, with the 22 in certain situations - low light, family stuff, if I have time for tripod and can get the right FOV, etc. My next add will be the 55-250 EF-S STM + adapter, then the 11-22 OR I may buy an SL1 or SL2 when/if it comes out. My main goal right now is having fun shooting pix!

Not for mine, the 18-55 covers about 75% of what I shoot.

Well I find that a lot of people here are too concerned with gear and not concerned enough about using the gear to take great pix and have fun. There are enough good souls that want to help, and give really good advice, that I still check in frequently...whatever you decide, enjoy!

Let's face it, if there was a 15-70mm f2-3.9 pancake lens for the EOS M, we'd all pay $800 for it, wouldn't we? That would be amazing. So to me, it's worth it just for the lens. EOS M has the 35mm equiv f2 pancake and the G1X II has a 24mm f2 pancake that zoom to 120mm f4 when needed.

It depends on what is important to you.

I have the EOS M and the G1X mII. They are different experiences as far as use, I enjoy both.

I think the touch screen on the M handles focus better and allows more control without scrolling through the menu.

I love the flip screen on the G1X mII. Low and high angles as well as moving it for glare.

The power zoom on the G1X mII is fast and responsive and allows for one-handed operation.

The zoom on the M lenses, being manual, give precise control.

The 11-22 lens for the M! I love wide angle lenses, and though the 24 (Equiv) of the G1XmII is nice, it isn't always wide enough.

All in one. Though I got the M as a compact alternative, it is sometimes a pain to carry the extra lens(es).

The optional viewfinder on the G1X. I have not received mine yet, just ordered it, so I cannot offer a review. But being able to use a viewfinder is terrific.

Love the quality on both.

Thanks for the input. It has been hard since there are no stores with an M nearby. My new camera M is arriving Friday. Holy crap. I needed to buy memory cards, batteries, cases. It is like a new system.

No, I would not pay that for such a lens.

Abu, you've said this about the G1X MkII before. What exactly do you not like about the MkII lens?

Because it is permanently attached to a sensor smaller than APS-C.
