My wife has the Canon Powershot SD770 IS and it has been a great camera. She mainly loves the size of it. For mother's day I got her the Canon SX 700. I shoot a lot of photos with DSLR and I researched her an upgrade and i found the SX700 had great reviews so I got it. But alas....its to big for her liking.

So what is the best upgrade from the SD770 IS in the same size? I assume the technology has improved since the SD770 IS...but I don't know where to begin looking.

Any guidance would be much appreciated

Thanks in advance

Hi Bill,

I just got a used S90 for 80EUR. It's about the same size and just a tad better. Because:

- IS works REALLY well, it's nearly impossible to have a blurred shot

- Starts with 28 mm (S110 starts even with 24mm)

- Better higher ISO, the biggest plus is that you are less dependant on perfect light

- Good auto shooter

Also look into a new S110 or S120. Don't expect wonders, but you will get at least the IQ of your IXUS.

We must never forget that women have a different view of the world around us ;)

I don`t have one myself, but I see that owners are highly praising Canon ELPH 330 HS (also known as IXUS 255 HS). It`s on the smaller size, so you may check that one and see if it gets a "go" :)

Here`s a quick comparison, 330 HS vs SD770 IS -- http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-ELPH-330-HS-vs-Canon_PowerShot_SD770_IS

While "S" series makes for a great, high-end compact camera (I have S120 myself), I`m not sure if it would be women`s choice, too, as it might appear a bit too "techie"...? Unless his wife is into it, of course.

All the advanced options, though not necessarily used, can easily confuse people wanting a simple point and shoot. ELPH / IXUS might be a better choice here, it`s smaller/lighter, too, and has more zoom.

Not to get me wrong, I do think that "S" is a better camera, but I also think not all the women would agree with us, and that is an important factor to consider here ;) It`s not about the best camera, it`s about the one they`ll like more, so they`ll be happy with it.

Otherwise, show her both Canon S110 and Canon ELPH 330 HS, and let her decide.

I also agree with one of the others posts - the Canon Elph 330HS is probably the closest modern camera to your wife's SD770. It has some good improvements, like ISO 6400, for somewhat better low light sensitivity, a 10X Optical Zoom, and a 24 mm wide angle view will draw a lot of scene into the photo. I think it's a great choice. She might even like the pink version. I would have to go for the blue or silver, myself. Pink just wouldn't work out too well for me. If you need a recommendation on where to get one, try Amazon. They can fix you up, at a good price.

Yep, I agree. if the sx700 is too big you really need a compact cam. The 330hs fits the bill- tiny, but lots of upgrades like more zoom, better screen, better video, etc. etc. The snapsort comparison above helps you see how the models have improved. Best of all, you can get it under $200 since it has been replaced with a newer (though in my opinion, not better) model.

In fact, here's the comparison of the 330hs and 340hs :P

I agree with the recommendation about the ELPH 330 HS. I recently purchased one to replace my ELPH 300. Lightweight, small form factor, great pictures and numerous settings including underexposure in 1/3 increments. The Canon USA website recently offered refurbs for $179, an excellent price.
