I am a newbie with a new S50. It appears the included Zoom Browser software does not include an image editor for cropping and enlarging a portion of photo. My Windows XP doesn't seem to have anything either. What is the best software on the market for this? I don't want to spend several hundered for Photoshop so hope there are some good alternatives.

Phil,

You can crop in Zoombrowser but not too much more. Many users seem happy with Photoshop Elements or Paint Shop Pro. Both can be found for well under $100. using upgrade rebates.

I think you would be very happy with Photoshop Elements 2. It has a lot of power, but is easy to use out of the box. The Dummies Guide for it is pretty good, too.

Did you get Arcsoft Photoimpressions4 packaged with the S400? It came as part of the package here in the UK. I'm sure it's nowhere near as good as Elements, but it'll do basic editing stuff to get going with. Also Videoimpressions for, well, video!

What came with the S50 is "ZoomBrowser EX, Photo Studio 5, Video Impressions 1.7".

Phil,

Photoshop Elements 2 would serve you well, as a starter.

Picture Window Pro ($90), written by Jonathan Sachs (author of Lotus 1,2,3), provides a powerful image editor geared for photographers. Few know about the program, but it rivals Photoshop in the features offered for photographers. It does not pretend to be a graphic arts software program, such as Photoshop. Curves, histograms and masks are integral parts of the program. The program NEVER alters your starting image!

The PS plug-in, Color Mechanic, is an offshoot of this program.

Normal Koren has a nice introduction to Picture Window Pro.

Picture Windwo Pro can be found at the website Digital Light and Color.

The new version of PWP 3.5 will come out in August and will have built-in features rivaling NeatImage and QImage, supposedly.

Jonathan Sachs writes wonderful software programs, logically constructed. It's lean and mean.

The extensive manual and white papers on numerous topics taught me more about image editing than the multiple books I read on the full-blown Photoshop program as well as Photoshop Elements.

It is not, however, idiot-proof, as is Photoshop Elements.

Good Luck with whatever you decide upon.

Arcsoft PhotoStudio5 that comes with the camera is an excellent photo-editing package. As far as I know, it has many if not most of the features
of PhotoShop.
