Firefox 29 is Ugly

It worked for me on Windows XP. I could not tell if it was faster or slower. Just uglier.
I still use XP 32 bit and had the unpleasant surprise to find out that the new menu bar is not designed for XP anymore since all the menu and browser tabs appear scrambled. More than this, the browsing speed slowed dramatically to about 10 times slower. I installed version 28 again, which runs very good on my machine.

I don't know about you guys. But, I really don't like the major User Interface changes that Mozilla made with Firefox 29.

If you don't have it installed yet, you can use the Firefox Menu for "Help>About" and it will download it for you automatically (as long as you're using the defaults for updates), then after it's finished and you restart Firefox when prompted, you'll have the latest Firefox 29 release.

But, personally, I really don't like the changes (an understatement, as I think the changes really stink and it's down right ugly in comparison to earlier Firefox releases, especially where the tabs are concerned).

For example the tabs are not as visible anymore because of the way they're trying to integrate them into the OS themes. Install the latest Firefox 29 release, and you'll see what I mean.

As for curved versus rectangular tabs, that probably wouldn't be as much of an irritant if the tabs were better defined.

In any event, I can't help to think that the changes really stink. They make a horrible first impression (as least from my perspective).

I'm even considering going to one of the earlier Firefox ESR versions so that I don't have to look at the new layout.

After updating to FF29 I spent some time trying to get it set-up to my preferences. The Classic Theme Restorer add-on helped a bit, but there were still too many features that I hated.

Since then I have installed the Pale Moon browser which is a project based off an earlier version of Firefox. After running the migration utility, all my Firefox settings, bookmarks, etc were copied to Pale Moon. Apart from a couple of minor Add-ons, it all seems to be working fine. I think I will be using this instead of Firefox from now on.

I like the new look, on both Ubuntu and Windows 8.1. It's great.

Thanks. That's a great extension. I've already reverted to Firefox 24.5 ESR (Extended Support Release) in some of my OS installations, as that seemed like the fastest and easiest way to avoid the major UI changes made with Firefox 29.

That way (switching to the current ESR releaser of Firefox), I don't have to see drastic changes in the User Interface so often at the whim of the Mozilla developers, yet the ESR versions still get security updates.

But, I tried the Classic Theme Restorer add-on that you linked to with Firefox 29 in one Linux installation, and it seems to work fine, too. So, again, thanks for the tip about it.

In any event, again, I hate it when developers make those kinds of drastic changes to the User Interface. Do they think everyone is going to instantly feel comfortable with a totally new User Interface? Sheesh... They're nuts if they really think that way.

I've got lots of friends and family members that are not very computer literate. So, sure enough, just as they're becoming comfortable with using Firefox, BAM, the User Interface changes (drastically).

That's not a very good thing. Maybe they're looking at Microsoft as a role model (as in the UI changes made between Windows 7 and Windows 8). Or, maybe they're just trying to clone Google Chrome or something.

Whatever Mozilla's motives, I'm not very happy with the changes (and I'm sure they caught a lot of Firefox users "off guard", and they'll probably end up losing a lot of them as a result of this kind of nonsense in what appears to be an attempt to mimic Google Chrome).

Yes, it looked quite complicated when FF 29 first presented me with a table of options. Instead I disabled my add-on theme and accepted the defaults, which remind me of Chrome.

Thanks for the idea. There is a precompiled Pale Moon for Linux, and it seems well liked:

Yep, FF caught me off guard. It's been a hit and miss in terms of performance depending upon the version but I've stuck with it simply because I can't stand the minimalistic looks of IE or other browsers. To be fair, I've been able to alter IE to some degree to give me the look I like but not entirely and definitely not ability to use it as I like. So I've been a FF user. It's not so much the ugliness of it as the usability. The fading tabs are a pain. I don't care about the shape so much as I can't see what's in my tabs until I look twice. And FF is/was famous for letting us put things where we want and I remember a few versions back they put tabs on top but let us put them below if we wanted. No longer. Why not? Cause the world is revolving around touch screens and mobile users. I'm sitting at home on a 1900x1200 screen and I have no issues with a space shortage but I'm not looking at an iphone browser. Yeesh. So what bothers me more than the look is that they took away my ability to make it look as I'd like. I already know about the addon but that's really lame on FF's part. They should be the ones giving us the about:config line so we can drop our tabs where we'd like. I shouldn't have to rely on a new addon that starts the description with a warning. So now, what sets FF apart from other browsers? Pretty much zippo. When their share of users starts declining, who will they have to blame? As I've been told, years and many testers and focus groups and so forth all decided this was the look needed to make FF the best. What FF didn't understand is that it looks the same as the others now. That's what all the testers and focus groups wanted, the other browsers with the FF name on it.

More responsive. More intuitive menu. Don't like the way background tabs don't have outlines.

I'm primarily a Chrome user, but congrats to the Firefox team. Fix the background tab thing and I might go back to FF.

I copied my fFox portable to another folder and then tried the upgrade, but somehow it found my original f Fox portable and upgraded that as well. &*^$%#%&^

I don't know how this is possible, but now I can't seem to go back. I am not really in a position right now, work wise to spend an hour or two redoing another f Fox portable. *^$^$%^&#@#$@

Any way to "undo" the UG.

Either you like it or hate it, but I'd rather stay up to date and get used to the new look instead of installing some old version and get left behind.

There's always a group that dislikes changes made in software. Apparently this time you're in that boat. There was also a group who hated it when the orange tab disappeared.

And the status bar has vanished ( not for the first time ). I have no idea what they have against the status bar, but it ought to at least be an option in the bloody menu. Also rather a stupid change as some extensions place icons and functionality on it ( the flashgot icon has gone down with the status bar, for example ).
Hi

My status bar disappears every now and then. It's fixed with a restore and maximize again of the FF window.

Install the Classic Theme Restorer. I didn't like the changes either but that add-on puts the interface back as it was.
