--hey guys im brand new here and i have made up my mind to buy the canon powershot s230 but i have a few questions..
i want to buy an extra battery and an extra smart media card..

the battery i want for those day long excursions and the card because it only comes with a 16mb card..

my questions are where can i buy a canon battery for a good price? and also where can i buy a smart media card for a good price.. and what would be a good size for the media card.. i want something that i can not worry about..

i also was told that the media card can affect the speed of the camera? is this true?

also finally do i need a usb card reader? or is that jus a luxury that i dont really need..

any input on any of my questions and anything else you can think of is greatly appreciated.. thanks in advance guys!

does it use smart media?
I thought it only used compact flash>
also finally do i need a usb card reader? or is that jus a luxury

it is somewhat of a luxury, perhaps unneccessary if you just leave your usb plugged in to your computer and plug in your camera as needed. I have one for my G2 and use the usb cable instead. It is something you can most certainly buy at a later date.

just bought one--s230-- for my son and he loves it. it appears to be a well thought out and constructed camera.

Camera uses Compact Flash only. I have 128mb Lexar card, works great.

I also use a USB 2.0 Imation Card Reader. Extra battery at a low price from http://www.slavin4u.com , it also works well.

Hey Mike, I got an S230. What country you are in? In the US I think you can get mail order, 128 megs for $40 or such. Whether 128 megs is enough or not is up to you (and how many movie clips you want to take also :-) ). I would say if you can try to go for 256 megs, but 128 megs should provide for ample fun.

How many pictures you want to take at once?

Yes go for 256mb! its getting so cheap now and buy some generic batteries at batterybarn.com but get the higher mAH. i got the s230 and i love it (except for the flash). if you can afford it go for the s400 but for a $399 budget the s230 is solid.

BTW i leave my s230 in the car, is it safe to leave it on a hot summer day?

I wouldln't leave the S230 exposed to the sun. Also not in plain view, depending where you live, it might be a good reason to break in your car :-)

Mike, here's a place I used to buy all my PC stuff from when I had a desktop, to upgrade it. When I lived in Illinois, I also stopped by their place as it was only 30 minutes from where I lived:

http://www.krex.com/products_detail_popup.asp?ItemCode=807

They have 256 megs for $54.95

You should also check for other places.

Amazon apparently has, after mail-in rebate, a viking 256 megs compact flash for $41.00 or such (does not include shipping).

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005AC8J/qid=1055735636/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/104-9056574-1589531?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846

Hope that helps.

Just bought mine today. They advertise 15% off, from $400. Put one in your cart, then log in or create an account, anyone can do it. Then check your cart, and it'll take ANOTHER 15% off!!! Your final price is $290!

I got a Sandisk 256Mb CF card for about $42, after the same discounts above. There's free shipping, and you only need ot add tax, which for me was about $16. All in all, a hard deal to beat. Now, we'll just see if this camera makes it way to my doorstep! Del doesn't have a great track record of honoring its really cheap deals.
